The popular MTV comedy Faking It, which originally aired for three seasons, is heading to streaming! You’ll be able to watch it for free on Pluto TV starting next month, along with several other shows.
Starting August 1st, Pluto TV is adding more TV shows to its free streaming service. Popular titles like Awkward, Reign, and Faking It will be available. Faking It originally aired on MTV from April 2014 to May 2016. Pluto TV is adding these shows to attract its biggest audience: viewers between 18 and 34 years old.
What Is Faking It About?
The show Faking It is a romantic comedy about high school friends Karma Ashcroft (Katie Stevens) and Amy Raudenfeld (Rita Volk). They both go to Hester High in the suburbs of Austin and struggle to fit in with the popular crowd. Their lives change when they’re invited to a party by Shane Harvey, a popular student who is gay. Shane mistakenly believes Karma and Amy are a lesbian couple, and this leads to everyone at school finding out about it.
Everyone at school starts thinking Karma and Amy are a couple, and suddenly they’re incredibly popular – basically celebrities at Hester High. They even get nominated for homecoming queen! Instead of setting the record straight, Karma and Amy decide to enjoy the attention. But for Amy, pretending to be in a relationship starts to feel confusing. When Karma begins spending more time with Liam Booker, a popular boy at school, Amy starts to realize she might actually have romantic feelings for her best friend.
Faking It Was Critically Acclaimed in Its Time, Despite Low Viewership
The MTV series Faking It received generally positive reviews during its run. On Rotten Tomatoes, critics gave it an 87% score, and viewers scored it at 85%. While the show was cancelled after three seasons, it was well-liked by reviewers – Season 2 even achieved a perfect 100% critic score (based on five reviews, compared to twelve for Season 1). In 2014, Faking It won a Teen Choice Award for “Choice TV Breakout Show.”
During its first season, critics praised Faking It as a clever and engaging high school comedy. The New York Times noted its freshness due to the largely unknown cast and crew. Entertainment Weekly highlighted the strong performances, particularly from Katie Volk, and credited the show’s charmingly witty tone – created by executive producer Carter Covington – for making it genuinely enjoyable.
I always loved Faking It, and I was so bummed when it got cancelled! Apparently, even though critics generally liked it, not enough people were watching – the ratings kept dropping, according to Headline Planet. After three seasons, they just had to pull the plug. But now, thankfully, it feels like this show is finally getting the attention it deserves and a chance for more people to discover it!
Faking It will be available to stream for free on Pluto TV starting Aug. 1.
