One of them was Josh Keaton, known for voicing Peter Parker in the popular 2008 animated series.

The story “Natural Selection” features Dr. Curt Connors, who accidentally turned himself into a monstrous creature called The Lizard through experiments with reptile genes. Spider-Man chased the Lizard to the Bronx Zoo and, aided by Curt’s son Billy and intern Eddie Brock, managed to get him to drink a special serum that reversed the transformation, turning Curt back into a human.
Peter’s adventures as Spider-Man typically created difficulties in his personal life. His friends and the Connors family didn’t know he was the one who had helped Curt, believing instead that someone else at the Daily Bugle was responsible. This misunderstanding led to him losing his internship and the trust of his classmates.
Peter returned home feeling defeated, carrying one last dose of a substance designed to remove his spider powers. He hoped it would finally let him live a normal life. Lost in thought, he bitterly recalled all the hardship being Spider-Man had caused – from injuries and pain to a completely disrupted personal life.
He thought it was all just misfortune—simply bad luck. Taking the serum felt like the most straightforward thing to do. But as he reached for the gene cleanser, a picture of himself with his Uncle Ben caught his eye, and he remembered what motivated him to become Spider-Man in the first place.

This famous line wasn’t featured in The Spectacular Spider-Man until a second-season flashback.
In the third episode of The Spectacular Spider-Man, Peter’s decision not to use the gene cleanser became a key reason for his actions throughout the series. Many versions of the Spider-Man story show him reacting to the gene cleanser in a certain way. However, fans appreciated that this adaptation allowed Peter to reach the same understanding based purely on his experiences as Spider-Man.
Something that really struck me was when Peter said “for now.” It felt like he was acknowledging, even to himself, that he might not always be Spider-Man. That’s why he held onto the gene cleanser instead of just getting rid of it or giving it back to Connors. He questioned his motives as Spider-Man – was he truly driven by a desire to save people, or just the excitement and adventure? Before he could dwell on it further, Venom attacked.
After rescuing Gwen Stacy, Peter felt his confidence return. He realized being Spider-Man wasn’t something he needed to fix, or a mistake from a single event. It was simply who he was meant to be – his purpose. He then discarded the gene cleanser, choosing to embrace his identity and continue living by the lessons he’d learned about accepting himself.
Even after almost twenty years, Peter’s speech in “Natural Selection” continues to be powerful for Keaton and those who admire him. The monologue brilliantly captured what makes Peter tick, staying true to the original character while also defining this version of Spider-Man from The Spectacular Spider-Man. Many consider it a standout moment, largely due to the quality of the writing.
