Stephen King is a world-famous author best known for his popular novels like Carrie, It, The Shining, and Pet Sematary. He’s written more than 60 books, selling over 350 million copies worldwide. Many of his stories have also become highly acclaimed films and television shows, including Stand by Me, The Shawshank Redemption, Misery, and The Green Mile.
At San Diego Comic-Con, Collider hosted a panel discussion with Katie Dippold, the showrunner of Apple TV+’s Widow’s Bay. They discussed the show’s upcoming second season, which was surprisingly greenlit nearly a week before the first season even finished airing. The series stars Mathew Rhys, Kingston Rumi Southwick, Stephen Root, Dale Dickey, Kevin Carroll, Jeff Hiller, and Kate O’Flynn.
Dippold recently shared encouraging news about the potential release of season two. They said the writing team began work this week and will continue for approximately 20 weeks. When asked about a possible start to filming, Dippold confirmed plans to begin shooting early next year.
Apple TV+’s Widow’s Bay has quickly become a hit series. Even Stephen King praised it on X, simply writing, “WIDOW’S BAY is good.” Viewers and critics alike seem to agree, giving the show remarkably high ratings: 98% from critics and 93% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers have called it a unique blend of horror and comedy that works exceptionally well, with some even declaring it “the best show on television right now.”
According to Angel Shaw of ScreenRant, Widow’s Bay skillfully balances suspense and humor, proving it ‘understands the careful relationship between the two’.
Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay received 19 Emmy nominations after its first season, including a nomination for best comedy series. Creator Sarah Dippold shared what she learned from making Season 1 as she prepares for Season 2: “I quickly realized the importance of ensuring every scene contributed to the overall story, and that’s my main focus now. We also had overly long and complicated scripts in Season 1, forcing me to make cuts at the last minute. I’ll be more careful with pacing this time around – we simply didn’t need all that extra material.”
At the time of writing, Widow’s Bay season 2 has yet to finalize an official release date.
