Sorry Henry Cavill Fans, Peacemaker Season 2 Just Retconned The Justice League (And Entire DCEU)

At present, the comic book world is particularly intriguing, given that the DC Universe (DCU) is only just starting out. Led by co-CEO James Gunn, the initial lineup of projects goes by the name Gods and Monsters, encompassing both film and television productions. Post the cinematic run of Superman, the new season of Peacemaker has commenced for viewers with HBO Max subscriptions. Unfortunately, Henry Cavill fans will find that the Justice League (along with the entire DCEU) underwent a retcon in the premiere episode.

At long last, Season 2 of “Peacemaker” has arrived, and its debut episode ignited a buzz on the internet. Fans who had been following DC movies for years were taken aback by how Gunn chose to clarify what is considered canon in the new DC Universe. This includes the appearances in the finale of “Peacemaker,” where brief cameos from the Justice League, featuring dialogue by Ezra Miller’s Flash and Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, occurred. Instead, we saw a group known as the Justice Squad, consisting of Superman (played by Kal-El) and Milly Alcock’s Supergirl, which essentially erased the previous shared universe from existence.

In a similar fashion to Season 1, the events unfolded quite similarly in the scene. At the beginning of the episode, during the “previously on DCU” segment that set the stage and provided necessary context excluded from the DCEU, we witnessed the Justice Gang (not League) making their appearance following the final confrontation. Unlike Miller and Momoa, this time it was Isabela Merced portraying Hawkgirl and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner who filled their roles in the group. Here is a representation of the team that has been expanded with characters from an increasingly diverse DCU.

Glancing at this collection, even if just for a moment, is quite thrilling. However, it could stir discomfort among fans of Cavill and the initial cast, who appear to have concluded their roles as those characters. It’s intriguing that Supergirl is part of the team, given her brief Superman appearance suggested she was more focused on socializing than helping people. Additionally, Metamorpho was conspicuously missing after apparently joining in David Corenswet’s film.

With this latest release, it seems the DCEU has reached its end. However, I believe director Gunn effectively established what is and isn’t part of the ongoing shared universe narrative. In fact, he filmed a scene featuring Peacemaker and Harcourt to elucidate his complex relationship with Green Lantern Guy Gardner. As hinted in the trailer for Peacemaker Season 2, both characters are present during his audition for the Justice Gang alongside Hawkgirl.

As a devoted fan, I can hardly contain my excitement for Season 2 of John Cena’s DC series! Who knows what thrilling surprises or unexpected appearances are in store for us? With the first season revealing the extensive use of the multiverse, it feels like anything is possible. I can’t wait to see where this incredible journey takes us next!
