The first trailer is out for John Cena’s upcoming action movie, Matchbox: The Movie, set to premiere on Apple TV in October.
The new movie, Matchbox, is a live-action adaptation of the popular Mattel toy line that first debuted in 1953. John Cena stars alongside Jessica Biel, Sam Richardson, Danai Gurira, Teyonah Parris, Arturo Castro, Randeep Hooda, Corey Stoll, Bill Camp, and Golshifteh Farahani. The film is directed by Sam Hargrave, known for directing the Extraction films.
During the 2026 San Diego Comic-Con, Apple TV presented a preview of its new shows in the Hall H panel, including titles like Dark Matter, Mayday, Widow’s Bay, and Silo.
The streaming service has unveiled the trailer for Matchbox: The Movie, featuring John Cena as Sean Walker, an FBI agent going undercover in his hometown. His mission unexpectedly pulls his childhood friends into a dangerous international adventure with serious consequences. You can watch the Matchbox: The Movie trailer below.
The movie opens with Amy, played by Biel, telling Sean (Cena) that it’s been years since they last played together as kids. The trailer then cuts to a flashback showing them as children, happily reuniting.
Now, she asks him what he’s done with himself over the years, but Sean is reluctant to share details, simply saying it’s a complicated story. He catches up with his old friends and confesses he never stays in one place for very long. They celebrate at a bar with drinks, but something isn’t right – they seem to have been drugged.
Sean suddenly understands what’s going on and warns his friends they’re about to find themselves in a completely new location – and he’s right. They all wake up tied up on a plane, with no idea where they’re going.
That’s when the bad guys from Matchbox: The Movie show up and demand to know where the nuclear warhead is hidden. They threaten Sean’s friends to get the information, but Sean manages to fight them off and explains that the CIA thinks he stole the warhead, which is why everyone is chasing him. Amy then suggests they steal the bombs back to clear their names and get their lives back to normal.
Sean realizes he’s endangered his friends and tries to convince Amy he prefers working solo. However, she firmly rejects this idea with a simple, “Not anymore.”
The trailer continues with exciting scenes of car chases, gunfire, and explosions. At one point, Sean’s friend recalls their childhood, remembering how they once used a toy tow truck as a ramp while playing with Matchbox cars. He suggests they can apply that same creativity to their current dangerous situation, saying, “Remember when we were kids and we used the Matchbox tow truck as a ramp?”
John Cena’s newest film is Matchbox, following roles in movies like Trainwreck, Bumblebee, the Fast & Furious series, The Suicide Squad, Argylle, and Heads of State. He also recently revisited his Suicide Squad character in the HBO Max series Peacemaker. Before Matchbox comes out, audiences can see Cena in Coyote vs. Acme, a live-action/animated movie hitting theaters on August 28th.
Matchbox marks Jessica Biel’s return to leading a feature film after a five-year hiatus. She has recently been featured in TV shows like Limetown, Candy, and The Better Sister, and also served as an executive producer on Cruel Summer. Now, she’s teaming up with John Cena for the first time in a new action comedy inspired by the classic Matchbox toys – think Game Night meets Mission: Impossible.
Matchbox: The Movie will be released Friday, October 9, 2026, on Apple TV.
