From the very beginning of the show, in season one’s first episode, after Dexter commits his initial murder (Mike Donovan), he disposes of the body by taking his boat, the “Slice of Life,” out to sea. He reflects on a deep-seated emptiness within himself, admitting he doesn’t understand its origin. He also confesses to being completely inauthentic when interacting with others, claiming he’s very good at pretending. Immediately after this internal monologue, as another boat passes by, Dexter surprisingly and cheerfully shouts, “Ahoy! Ahoy there captain! Any big marlin out there today?”
