Although the series features many unforgettable characters, the endings for some of the most compelling ones feel rushed or unsatisfying. It’s understandable that a story with such a large cast couldn’t fully resolve every character’s arc, but certain storylines deserved more thoughtful conclusions.
As a huge Harry Potter fan, I have to admit I’m really frustrated with how some characters ended up. It’s heartbreaking to see some of our favorites die, but honestly, it’s almost worse when characters survive and then… just don’t really go anywhere. After investing in these people for seven books and eight movies, it feels like we deserved a better epilogue, something that really showed what happened to them afterward. It just didn’t feel complete.
Lavender Brown’s Ending Isn’t Clear
Lavender Brown was a Gryffindor student at Hogwarts, in the same year as Harry Potter. While she wasn’t close to Harry, Ron, and Hermione – except for a short, awkward relationship with Ron – she was a member of Dumbledore’s Army and fought in the Battle of Hogwarts. This showed she was more than just someone interested in gossip and boys, proving her classmates’ initial impressions of her were wrong.
The fate of Lavender Brown in the Harry Potter books is unclear. Although the movie implied she died during the battle, this isn’t confirmed in the books. Even though she wasn’t a major character, Lavender deserved a more definitive ending. Her death, had it occurred, should have been acknowledged and felt by other characters, as she was still a young student who deserved a proper send-off.
Neville Longbottom’s Ending is Anti-Climactic
As a big fan, I always felt Neville Longbottom deserved a truly amazing conclusion to his story. It’s great to know he eventually married Hannah Abbott and became the Herbology professor at Hogwarts, and I’m happy he found happiness. But considering he was a key leader in the battle at Hogwarts and the one who destroyed Nagini – Voldemort’s last Horcrux – I, like many others, really hoped for something even more significant for him.
Neville briefly worked as an Auror after the war, but that career didn’t really suit him. He had the intelligence and adventurous spirit to become a famous herbalist, perhaps even traveling the globe to study magical plants. Instead, he ended up with a rather unremarkable life, which is a bit disappointing considering his potential.
The Harry Potter Series Failed Fleur Delacour’s Character Development
Fleur Delacour was considered exceptionally talented for her age, demonstrated by her selection to represent Beauxbatons in the Triwizard Tournament. She quickly proved her skill by being hired by Gringotts right after finishing school. However, once she began a relationship with Bill Weasley, her character development seemed to focus solely on their romance, diminishing her own independent storyline.
Ultimately, fans only know that Fleur Delacour remains happily married to Bill Weasley and they have three children – Victoire, Dominique, and Louis. Unfortunately, we never learn about what she does with her life or any accomplishments of her own. Given that Fleur is a quarter-Veela who bravely fought in the Battle of Hogwarts, it’s disappointing that her character isn’t developed beyond her relationship with Bill.
Rubeus Hagrid’s Storyline Is Abandoned
Hagrid is a key character in the series – a half-giant who faces prejudice from many within the wizarding world. He was wrongly expelled from Hogwarts after Tom Riddle falsely accused him of opening the Chamber of Secrets. Later, in the fifth book, Hagrid travels to visit the Giants hoping they’ll support Dumbledore, though he isn’t successful. He does, however, bring his brother Grawp back with him.
Despite exploring Hagrid’s relationship with his brother, Grawp, the book doesn’t resolve his deeper feelings about his family and background. Although Grawp assists in the Battle of Hogwarts, Hagrid’s personal life remains incomplete. The series doesn’t show him finding love or starting a family, which is surprising considering his clear attraction to Olympe Maxime.
Luna Lovegood’s Ending Seems Like an Afterthought
While Luna has a happy ending – becoming a well-known expert on magical creatures and marrying Rolf Scamander – many fans believe she deserved more recognition for her contributions. She bravely faced danger at Malfoy Manor, fought in the Battle of Hogwarts, and played a crucial role in helping Harry find a Horcrux. Overall, she was a vital hero throughout the series, and her efforts feel somewhat overlooked.
Although Luna Lovegood played an important part in Harry Potter’s story, the books never really portray her as a hero. It would have added depth to her character if she’d been shown actively helping others. Many fans also wished that Luna and Neville Longbottom had become a couple, since their connection was popular throughout the series.
Alastor Moody Deserved To Die in a Fair Battle
Alastor Moody, arguably the most skilled Auror in the Harry Potter series, was killed by Lord Voldemort during the Battle of the Seven Potters. Despite being a legendary Auror responsible for imprisoning many Death Eaters during the First Wizarding War, his defeat feels inconsistent with his impressive record. While Voldemort was an exceptionally powerful and dangerous wizard, many others managed to fight and survive encounters with him.
It’s understandable that the final book aimed to increase the tension, and Moody’s death immediately signals the start of a war. However, many readers had hoped for a grand battle showcasing Alastor’s full potential and the story of his character. Instead, he’s unexpectedly killed after Mundungus Fletcher’s betrayal.
Minerva McGonagall’s Character Is Barely Known
Minerva McGonagall became a beloved character thanks to her intelligence, unwavering loyalty, and caring personality. Though known as a strict teacher, she consistently supported Harry during his time at Hogwarts. She bravely opposed Dolores Umbridge, defended the castle when Dumbledore was away, and played a key role in leading the fight against Voldemort during the Second Wizarding War.
Despite being a significant character, Minerva McGonagall’s backstory and personal life weren’t explored much in the Harry Potter books or films. Fans only learned more about her through additional stories published on the Pottermore website. While her becoming headmistress of Hogwarts fits her character, readers hoped to also see her have a fulfilling personal life.
Sirius Black’s Death Broke Everyone’s Hearts
As a huge Harry Potter fan, I always felt Sirius Black’s death was one of the hardest to accept – so many good characters didn’t deserve their fates, but his just felt especially unfair. He never really got a chance at happiness! Even back in school, he dealt with this awful family legacy. Then, losing James and Lily, being wrongly accused of betraying them, and spending twelve years in Azkaban… it was brutal. Just when things were finally looking up with Harry, and he might actually get some peace, tragedy struck again at the Ministry. It’s just so heartbreaking.
To support the Order of the Phoenix, Sirius Black was forced to spend his final year living in Grimmauld Place, a home he loathed. Sirius was a close friend, a father figure to Harry, and a remarkably talented wizard, and he deserved a better life than one filled with sadness and cut tragically short. Unlike the other Marauders, he didn’t get to enjoy much life at all, and his death came unexpectedly.
Fred Weasley’s Death Broke the Most Beloved Relationship in the Harry Potter Series
Fred and George Weasley were inseparable from the start of the series. Harry rarely saw them apart; they were not just twins, but also best friends. Even as Beaters on the Quidditch team, they worked as a pair. Eventually, the mischievous brothers left Hogwarts and channeled their creativity into a thriving magical joke shop. Essentially, their lives were completely connected.
Fred’s death early in the Battle of Hogwarts was a huge shock to readers, especially since it wasn’t even in a fight. Everyone loved Fred because he was funny, kind, and a great friend. But the most heartbreaking part was thinking about George having to live without his twin brother. They deserved a long life together, watching their children grow up and probably even planning an extravagant wedding for one of them.
Nymphadora Tonks Had Just Become a Mom When She Died
Few deaths in the Harry Potter series are as heartbreaking as Nymphadora Tonks’. After a complicated romance, she and Remus Lupin married amidst the Second Wizarding War. Tragically, shortly after giving birth to their son, Teddy, Tonks fought in the Battle of Hogwarts.
Tonks had planned to stay home with her son, but she felt compelled to fight alongside her husband when so many others were putting themselves in danger. Sadly, she was killed by her cousin, Bellatrix Lestrange. Remus Lupin also died that day, and the heartbreaking image of their bodies lying side-by-side remains a particularly devastating moment in the story. Many fans believe Tonks and Remus could have found the happiness James and Lily Potter were denied, and it would have been more satisfying to see them raise Teddy together instead of him being orphaned.
