It’s been three years since the release of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, and director Jonathan Goldstein is now sharing updates about a possible follow-up movie.
The movie Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, based on the popular game, premiered on March 31, 2023, but didn’t perform as well as hoped at the box office, earning a total of $205.46 million. Although critics generally liked the film, its release between the successful movies John Wick: Chapter 4 and The Super Mario Bros. Movie likely impacted its performance.
Director Jonathan Goldstein has shared an update on the possibility of a follow-up to the Dungeons & Dragons movie. During an interview with Ash Crossan from ScreenRant at San Diego Comic-Con, Goldstein revealed that he and his fellow writers were actually commissioned to write a script for a sequel.
There’s a screenplay available, but Goldstein doesn’t know if it will be made into a movie because of money issues.
He admitted that the movies are costly to produce, but he’d really enjoy making them. He had a great experience working with the cast of Honor Among Thieves, and he thinks the script he helped write will appeal to fans.
We were commissioned to write a follow-up to Dungeons & Dragons, and we completed a script. However, due to the high cost of making these films, it’s uncertain if the movie will ever be produced. We enjoyed working with the original cast and believe the sequel we wrote would be well-received by fans.
The movie Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves features a cast including Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Sophia Lillis, Justice Smith, Hugh Grant, Chloe Coleman, Jason Wong, and Bradley Cooper. The story centers around Ed Darvis, played by Pine, and Holga Kilgore, played by Rodriguez, two criminals who break out of prison and try to steal a powerful magical item.
While Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves didn’t perform strongly at the box office, it received very positive reviews from critics, earning a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences also loved it, giving it a score of 92%.
The film received a nomination for Best Fantasy Film at the Saturn Awards. Additionally, Goldstein, along with co-director John Francis Daley and co-screenwriter Michael Gilio, won a Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation (Long Form).
Previously, Goldstein and Daley discussed the possibility of making another Dungeons & Dragons movie, and Paramount’s Brian Robbins was interested, though he wanted to lower the production costs. Now that Robbins has left Paramount and the company has merged with Warner Bros., it’s uncertain whether a sequel will happen.
A few years ago, plans were underway for a TV show based on Dungeons & Dragons. Although Paramount canceled the project, Netflix revived it as The Forgotten Realms. As of February 2025, Drew Crevello was leading the show as showrunner, executive producer, and writer, with Shawn Levy and Dan Levine also producing.
While there’s talk of continuing the story with a TV series, it’s currently uncertain if another Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves movie will be made, according to recent news from Goldstein.
