The highly anticipated first trailer is here! Prime Video debuted the trailer today during their presentation at San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H. Cast members were present, alongside showrunner Silka Luise and executive producers Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson.
The first look at the Blade Runner 2099 trailer was unveiled today, and it’s been confirmed that all eight episodes will be available to stream on Prime Video starting November 25th. Check out the trailer below!
What Is Blade Runner 2099 About?
Blade Runner 2099 explores a new dynamic between artificial beings (replicants) and humans. After replicants rebelled and gained control, the tables have turned – now humans are in a subordinate position. As Luisa explained, the series focuses on what happens after humanity’s dominance ends and questions what it truly means to be human when being human isn’t as important anymore.
Fifty years after the original Blade Runner, Los Angeles has been rebuilt – but not by people. In Blade Runner 2099, Cora is on the run and desperately tries to escape her past by taking on a new role as a Blade Runner. She’s forced to team up with Olwen, a Replicant who doesn’t have much time left, to track down a runaway who holds a secret that could destroy their already unstable city.
According to showrunner Silka Luisa, Michelle Yeoh’s character, Olwen, is tracking down a group of runaway replicants. Knowing replicants have a predetermined lifespan, Olwen is aware she’s nearing the end of her own life, with only a few days left to live.
Blade Runner 2099 Returns to the Books
When developing Blade Runner 2099, the team revisited Philip K. Dick’s novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? – the source material for the original Blade Runner. Luisa explained they used the book extensively to expand the show’s setting. “Because it’s a TV series with more runtime than a film,” she said, “we had the chance to really build out the world, explore new locations, and delve into aspects of history and the universe that fans have been eager to see. The book was invaluable in guiding us on where to focus our efforts.”
Joining Michelle Yeoh (known for Star Trek: Discovery) and Angus Cloud (from Euphoria), the cast of Blade Runner 2099 includes Dimitri Abold (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes) and Lewis Gribben (Somewhere Boy). The series will also feature recurring appearances by Katelyn Rose Downey (The Nun II), Daniel Rigby (Renegade Nell), Johnny Harris (A Gentleman in Moscow), Amy Lennox (Only Child), Sheila Atim (The Woman King), Matthew Needham (House of the Dragon), Tom Burke (Furiosa), and Maurizio Lombardi (Ripley).
Silka Luisa leads the series as showrunner and also serves as an executive producer alongside Ridley Scott, Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson of Alcon Entertainment, Ben Roberts, David W. Zucker, Clayton Krueger (from Scott Free Productions), Tom Spezialy, Richard Sharkey, Michael Green, Cynthia Yorkin, Frank Giustra, and Isa Dick Hackett. Jonathan van Tulleken, known for his work on Shogun, is an executive producer and directed the first two episodes of Blade Runner 2099.
Blade Runner 2099 premieres on Prime Video on Nov. 25.
