Godzilla has faced many terrifying monsters, but some are more dangerous than others. Villains like Destoroyah, SpaceGodzilla, King Ghidorah, and Mechagodzilla have truly earned their fearsome reputations by giving Godzilla a real challenge in battle. They’ve pushed him harder than any other enemy he’s faced.
Even when facing weaker opponents, Godzilla has had some truly challenging fights. Throughout Godzilla vs. Kong, Kong was often outmatched, but he still managed to hold his own and even pushed Godzilla to use his most powerful attacks at the end. Other monsters like Hedorah, Gigan, Orga, and Megaguirus also gave Godzilla tough battles, each forcing him to adapt thanks to their special abilities.
However, many monsters haven’t been a real threat to Godzilla. They were significantly weaker, meaning Godzilla always won easily, or it was obvious he would, without needing any assistance from the humans in the story.
5. Anguirus
While Anguirus is now known as one of Godzilla’s biggest allies, he started out as an enemy. He first appeared in the 1955 film Godzilla Raids Again, as the very first monster to battle Godzilla. Even though their fight was the focus, Godzilla was still clearly in charge throughout the entire encounter.
Throughout most of the fight, Anguirus grappled with Godzilla and even bit him several times. However, he never seemed capable of winning. Godzilla was much larger and more powerful. While Anguirus is a decent fighter – known for burrowing underground and attacking with his spiky shell – he didn’t use either of those abilities in the film Godzilla Raids Again.
Films such as Godzilla vs. Gigan demonstrate that Anguirus is more effective when fighting alongside Godzilla rather than as an independent opponent. This idea is further supported by Godzilla: Final Wars (2004), which shows Godzilla defeating Anguirus, Rodan, and King Caesar all in a single battle with relative ease.
4. Ebirah
In Ebirah, Horror of the Deep, Godzilla faced off against Ebirah, a giant lobster monster used as a weapon by the terrorist group Red Bamboo. Although the plot involved a threat of nuclear disaster, the fights between Godzilla and Ebirah weren’t as crucial to the overall stakes. This makes Ebirah, Horror of the Deep unusual for the Godzilla series, as it’s a film where Godzilla easily defeats the main monster in every encounter.
In their initial clash, the massive lobster attempted to pull Godzilla underwater, but was driven away when Godzilla threw a rock at it. Later, during the final fight, Godzilla ripped off Ebirah’s claws – his main way of attacking – effectively ending the threat.
In Godzilla: Final Wars, Godzilla easily defeated Ebirah again, 38 years after their first fight. He quickly overcame both Ebirah and Hedorah in a brief scene before continuing to battle other monsters.
3. Kamacuras
Kamacuras is a giant, praying mantis-like monster that lives on Monster Island. It first appeared in the 1967 film Son of Godzilla, where three Kamacuras attacked to harass Godzilla’s son. Godzilla defeated and killed two of them, while the third escaped. Despite being three against one, the Kamacuras couldn’t harm Godzilla, who ultimately crushed one and incinerated another with his atomic breath.
As a big Godzilla fan, I always felt bad for the Kamacuras! They’re pretty small compared to everyone else, and it really showed in Son of Godzilla – they didn’t stand a chance. Sadly, even years later in Godzilla: Final Wars, things didn’t get any better. Godzilla literally took one of them out with just a single toss. It was…not their finest moment.
When looking at all the creatures that have appeared in Godzilla movies, Kamacuras is generally considered one of the least impressive.
2. Ion Dragon
Like the Godzilla from Toho films, the Godzilla in the Monsterverse has had a mixed record in battles. He’s needed rescuing during fights with Mechagodzilla and King Ghidorah, and has struggled against Kong, the MUTOs, and Shimo. However, he’s also had easier wins, like his fight with the flying Titan, the Ion Dragon, in the first season finale of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
The Ion Dragon initiated the conflict when they met in Axis Mundi, boldly attacking Godzilla. However, it quickly became apparent that it was outmatched and couldn’t win. Much smaller than Godzilla, it stood little chance against his immense power, and he could have easily defeated it.
Godzilla was briefly blinded by the Ion Dragon’s acidic spit, but it didn’t really change the outcome of the fight – and it definitely made Godzilla angrier. Shortly after, Godzilla ripped off one of the Ion Dragon’s wings and threw it into the rift leading to the Hollow Earth. While it’s still unconfirmed if the Ion Dragon survived, it’s unlikely it would challenge Godzilla again.
1. Zilla
The 1998 Godzilla film, produced by TriStar Pictures, is often criticized for being a weaker version of the classic kaiju and not living up to the ‘King of the Monsters’ reputation. Surprisingly, Toho – the original creators of Godzilla – acknowledged this interpretation in their film Godzilla: Final Wars. The movie includes a quick scene where Godzilla briefly battles a monster that’s clearly meant to be the 1998 design.
To really emphasize how different their Godzilla was from the American version, Godzilla: Final Wars had Godzilla famously defeat the smaller Hollywood monster with a single kick. As if that wasn’t enough, the studio then officially changed the American Godzilla’s name to “Zilla.”
