Although published over eighty years ago, J.R.R. Tolkien’s stories about Middle-earth continue to achieve new milestones. It all began with The Hobbit in 1937, followed by The Lord of the Rings series between 1954 and 1955. It’s amazing how popular these books remain, even as the world around us changes. While the books themselves are cherished, it’s the more recent film and television adaptations that have truly captured the public’s imagination.
For over twenty years, Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films have defined how most people imagine Tolkien’s Middle-earth and its characters. However, Jackson and New Line Cinema weren’t the first – or last – to adapt Tolkien’s work for visual media. Amazon Prime Video has also explored this world with their TV series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, focusing on the Second Age of Middle-earth.
Although Rings of Power brought us back to Tolkien’s world in 2022 after Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit films, it won’t be the only new adaptation for long. New Line Cinema is developing several more Lord of the Rings projects, including a movie called The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, directed by Andy Serkis. This film will focus on Gollum’s story before Frodo begins his journey, and it’s exciting news that Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen are likely to reprise their roles.
For the first time ever in the world of The Lord of the Rings, audiences will see two different actors playing the same beloved character. Ian McKellen has famously played Gandalf for many years, and fans will be thrilled to see him reprise the role. Meanwhile, a new actor will portray a younger version of Gandalf – known as Gandalf the Grey – in The Rings of Power.
Taking over the iconic role previously played by Ian McKellen in the first two seasons of Rings of Power was a significant challenge for Daniel Weyman, but he’s handled it well. It must have been difficult for him to accept the part knowing McKellen would soon reprise the role elsewhere in the Rings of Power universe. This creates a lot of pressure, and it remains to be seen if the show itself can withstand the comparison.
The Hunt For Gollum Is Bad News For Rings Of Power’s Gandalf
Gandalf is a complex character in The Lord of the Rings, and fans have long asked for a series showing his backstory. Rings of Power does explore his origins, but it’s not quite what people expected. The version of Gandalf we see in The Lord of the Rings – Gandalf the Grey – wasn’t supposed to be present in Middle-earth during that period.
The portrayal of Gandalf in Rings of Power significantly deviates from J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings. In Tolkien’s lore, Gandalf isn’t supposed to appear in Middle-earth until much later, and the idea of him being an amnesiac learning his powers—especially with help from Tom Bombadil—is a new addition created for the show. These changes have drawn considerable criticism from fans. Now, Rings of Power also faces competition from a new animated Lord of the Rings film, meaning this version of Gandalf, played by Weyman, will be compared to Ian McKellen’s iconic performance.
Weyman probably didn’t want to be in this position. The initial reactions were already negative, and now that he’ll be appearing around the same time as the original, beloved actor, the criticism is likely to intensify. Hopefully, Weyman will still receive respect for his work, but it’s hard to ignore the excitement surrounding McKellen’s return to the role.
