Season 2 of X-Men ’97 is now available, and it shows a big change in Professor X’s vision for the future. Throughout the series, Professor X has always believed humans and mutants could live together peacefully. But with growing fear and mistreatment of mutants, and recent heartbreaking events, Xavier and the X-Men are now taking a different approach.
The latest episode of X-Men ’97 introduced a storyline inspired by classic Marvel comics. Following the destruction of Genosha and Magneto’s death, Professor X is taking a new approach to protecting mutants by founding a new organization called X-Corp.
Season 2 of X-Men ’97 is taking the company X-Corp in a new direction, but it’s based on a rich history from Marvel Comics. Here’s what you need to know about X-Corp and where its story might go in future episodes of X-Men ’97.
Following Magneto’s Death, Charles Xavier Debuts X-Corp, A Brand-New Evolution
After Apocalypse killed Magneto and half the X-Men were sent back in time to learn about his beginnings, Charles Xavier understood the team needed a major change. The season 2 finale of X-Men ’97 shows Xavier announcing the creation of X-Corp, a large new company. Its first headquarters is being built on the ruins of Genosha, as a memorial to Magneto and all the mutants who died in the Sentinel attacks from the first season – including Gambit.
X-Corp isn’t just about teaching mutants at Xavier’s School. It’s a big step towards expanding the X-Men’s work globally. With prejudice against mutants increasing, Professor X understands the need to have a stronger presence worldwide to protect all mutants in a rapidly changing world.
Originally appearing in Marvel comics, X-Corp started as a worldwide branch of the X-Men, working to protect mutant rights with offices around the world. Interestingly, the show X-Men ’97 makes a change from the comics by not establishing an X-Corp headquarters on Genosha. In the original comic books, X-Corp closed down after a massive event called “M-Day,” when most mutants lost their powers. But the company later returned during a period known as the Age of Krakoa, becoming important for managing the growing mutant economy and trade from the newly formed nation of Krakoa.
With all of this happening, X-Corp starting operations in Genosha feels like a hopeful sign for what could eventually come to pass.
What Does The X-Men’s Future Look Like With X-Corp?
Looking ahead to future seasons of X-Men ’97, X-Corp offers a lot of promise for the team. With X-Corp’s support, the X-Men can more easily help mutants around the world. Basing X-Corp in Genosha could also shield Xavier from political interference from the U.S. government and reduce conflicts with Valerie Cooper’s X-Factor team. However, even with their increased independence, Cooper still appears intent on pursuing the X-Men for what she considers unlawful actions.
Xavier feels a major threat from Apocalypse is coming soon, and he’s determined to have the X-Men ready for their next battle with En Sabah Nur. The latest episode makes this clear when Apocalypse brings Gambit back to life as one of his powerful Horsemen. Xavier hopes that by expanding internationally with X-Corp, the X-Men will be prepared for Apocalypse’s final attack before the end of X-Men ’97 season 2.
