2026 is shaping up to be a huge year for Harry Potter fans! Not only is Warner Bros. creating a brand new TV series for HBO, but there’s a lot more to look forward to within the wizarding world.
Can you believe it? In 2026, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone will be 25 years old! As a huge fan, I was thrilled to hear Warner Bros. is going all out to celebrate. They’re bringing the first movie back to cinemas, and there’s even more exciting stuff planned. But the best part? Before the year is over, all eight original Harry Potter films are getting a brand new release as a gorgeous Collector’s Edition – it hits shelves on October 6th! I’ve already marked my calendar.

The first Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, was released in 2001 and directed by Chris Columbus. It began introducing audiences to the enchanting world of magic and its central characters: Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger. Over the next decade, six more films continued their story, finishing with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 in 2011. Warner Bros. chose to divide the final book into two movies.
Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson – known as the Golden Trio – starred in the films alongside many highly respected actors from Britain and Ireland, such as Ralph Fiennes, Richard Harris, Helena Bonham Carter, Jason Isaacs, Emma Thompson, Gary Oldman, and Alan Rickman.
As a huge movie fan, I remember being absolutely amazed by the success of the Harry Potter films. The entire series made a staggering $7.77 billion around the world, which is incredible considering they only cost about $1.15 billion to make. And Deathly Hallows – Part 2? That was a record-breaker – one of the biggest blockbusters of all time when it came out!
Harry Potter’s TV Show Will Be Different
Despite ongoing concerns about another TV adaptation – especially since the last movie ended only fifteen years ago – the show faced initial criticism when set photos appeared very similar to those from the films. However, the people making the show have emphasized that this new version will be distinct and original.
The latest film received a PG-13 rating, a significant change from the first movie’s PG rating. Cinematographer Adriano Goldman also discussed the visual style. The first two Harry Potter films, directed by Chris Columbus (known for Home Alone), were known for being very colorful and bright. However, Goldman explained that Columbus’ approach felt “cartoony,” with colors, acting, and camera angles all being overly dramatic and exaggerated.
The cinematographer hinted that the upcoming version of the story will aim for a more realistic and down-to-earth feel. This will be achieved through visual choices like a natural color scheme, authentic locations, and more subtle camera work – a departure from potentially over-the-top effects or grandiosity.
HBO’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone premieres on HBO Max on Dec. 25.
