Fans of Avatar have even more to celebrate this year! In addition to a new season of the live-action Netflix series and a sequel movie for The Last Airbender, a fighting game is now in development – something fans have been hoping for since the original show first aired.
Avatar Legends is a one-on-one fighting game featuring characters from both Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. It can be challenging for fighting games to maintain popularity over time – players often get interested initially but then lose interest. However, based on an early version of the game, Avatar Legends seems well-equipped to avoid that problem.
Avatar Legends Honors the Character’s Fighting Style
What really stands out in Avatar Legends is how well the fighting feels – it flows just like the battles in the show. It’s not just about hitting buttons quickly; each move combination is designed with strategy in mind. Plus, every character feels different to play, with unique fighting styles even if they share the same elemental bending ability.
Each character has a distinct playstyle. Earthbenders control the ground and defend against aerial attacks. Firebenders are quick and focus on offense. Waterbenders are fluid and can become very powerful quickly. The game even includes characters who don’t bend elements, like Sokka, and they feel balanced. While some players might question how strong certain characters are compared to others, the power levels work well within the game itself. The game prioritizes fun and fair one-on-one fights, so some attacks might not perfectly counter each other, but that gives players a better experience.
If you’re an Avatar fan hesitant about a fighting game, don’t worry – the game has a fantastic training mode. It slows down complex combos and breaks them down step-by-step, making it much easier to learn and understand each move. This helps you feel confident when you’re actually playing. The main problem with training is that it can be buggy; sometimes, it incorrectly shows that you’re performing a move wrong, even when you’re doing it right.
The Story Mode for Avatar Legends is Short and Sweet
Fans can be optimistic because the story was written by the original creators of the series, Michael Dante DiMartino and Tim Hedrick. However, those hoping for a massive, sprawling tale might be surprised. The story mode is relatively short, clocking in at around 5 hours, but it’s a very enjoyable experience.
While it would have been simple to retell the original story, this version offers a fresh take. It’s a fantastic way to bring together characters from across different eras and allow them to connect. And without giving too much away, some of these characters have evolved since their appearances in the shows and comics.
The Hand-Drawn Animation is Perfectly Lifted From the Shows
A more cartoonish visual style could have been a simpler choice for Avatar Legends, but even though the game doesn’t perfectly match the look of the original comics or show, it still looks great. It’s really remarkable that Avatar Legends managed to recreate the hand-drawn animation directly from the animated series.
Each frame of animation was created by hand, and pictures simply can’t capture how beautiful it is. The developers, Gameplay Group International, clearly put a lot of love and attention into the project, honoring both source materials.
The show isn’t just visually appealing, it feels real too. For example, when Sokka flees from a fight – the way he sprints away with a completely panicked expression is perfectly him! Those small, authentic touches are all over Avatar Legends.
Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game Is Exactly What Fans Want
Although Avatar Legends may not appeal to everyone, fans of the series will absolutely love this amazing fighting game. It brilliantly captures a core element from both Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, which works perfectly in a fighting format. The way the characters move – not just during attacks, but in all their animations – really demonstrates the developers’ dedication and appreciation for the source material.
This game is clearly made with care and passion for its players – even those who don’t usually play fighting games will find it fun! Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is a fantastic new entry in the genre and has the potential to attract a large following.
Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is coming out on July 23rd for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
