HBO’s highly anticipated new series is almost here! It will premiere on Christmas, and we’re starting to learn more about it.
Following a detailed interview with cinematographer Adriano Goldman, there’s an update on the upcoming Harry Potter show. HBO Max has now rated the first installment, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, as TV-14.
Harry Potter’s Official Rating Sounds Promising
The recent rating for the Harry Potter series is unexpected, given that TV-MA typically indicates mature themes and violence. However, it fits with HBO’s reputation for pushing boundaries in ways that traditional television networks don’t.
The initial Harry Potter film, released in 2001 as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, was rated PG, just like the next two installments, Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire received a PG-13 rating, and this continued with Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in 2009, which went back to being rated PG. The last two movies in the series were also rated PG-13.
The TV-14 rating is comparable to a PG-13 movie rating, but it can accommodate slightly more adult themes depending on the specific television network. While both ratings might include some violence or strong language, TV-14 provides networks with greater flexibility in how they present content and relies more on subtle storytelling.
While Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone isn’t particularly violent, the series as a whole will probably explore the mistreatment Harry suffered while living with the Dursleys—things like bullying and neglect. This sets up opportunities for more intense action in Quidditch matches and ultimately, in the final battle against Voldemort.

Harry Potter Season 1 Isn’t Done Yet
Even though the new Harry Potter series is set to premiere in just five months, production is still underway. According to cinematographer Adriano Goldman, they are currently still working on editing the first episode.
Goldman also discussed the early Harry Potter films. The first two movies, directed by Chris Columbus (known for Home Alone), were known for being bright and visually striking. They successfully introduced audiences to the wizarding world and Hogwarts. However, Goldman pointed out that Columbus’ approach felt somewhat like a cartoon, with overly vibrant colors, exaggerated acting, and dramatic camera angles.
He hinted that the updated version would aim for a more authentic and relatable feel. This would be achieved through a more natural visual style – think realistic colors, fewer flashy locations, and smoother camera work – to create a more immersive experience.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone premieres on HBO Max on Dec. 25.
