The upcoming continuation of Supernatural offers a more promising path for the show than how season 16 concluded, at least for now. Since it first aired in 2005, Supernatural has become one of television’s most popular paranormal horror dramas, lasting an impressive 15 seasons. The connection between fans and Sam and Dean Winchester is incredibly strong, so it’s no surprise many have hoped for the show to come back. Even the actors themselves have considered ways to revive it – Jared Padalecki envisioned a limited series similar to Gilmore Girls, while Misha Collins proposed using time travel as a plot device.
As much as I (and every other fan!) want a Supernatural reunion, there haven’t been any solid announcements yet. It’s tough to get everything lined up – they need a great storyline and find the time to actually film it, which is hard with Jensen Ackles and Eric Kripke both working on The Boys right now. Luckily, we’ve had some new Supernatural content thanks to the comics from Dynamite Entertainment! They’re telling a brand-new story that fits perfectly into the existing timeline, so it feels official.
The current 10-issue story arc, which revisits the early days of the show between seasons one and two, will conclude on August 26th. Following that, a special oversized issue called Supernatural: Wayward Special #1, from Paulina Ganucheau and John Amor, kicks off a major new storyline on September 2nd. This event will split Sam and Dean apart, with each brother getting their own ongoing comic series – Supernatural: Sam Winchester and Supernatural: Dean Winchester – that will tell interconnected stories.
As a longtime fan, I admit it’s a little disappointing to see Supernatural return only in comic form when what we all really want is another season on TV. The heart of that show was always the cast and how well they played off each other. But looking at some of the recent attempts to bring back shows like this, maybe holding out for a truly great TV revival – even if it takes longer – is actually the best way to honor what Supernatural meant to us.
The TV show The Winchesters was cancelled after just one season. Similarly, a planned reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which would have brought back Sarah Michelle Gellar and been directed by Oscar winner Chloé Zhao, was cancelled before filming even began. Let’s hope the upcoming animated revival of Firefly fares better. Meanwhile, the Supernatural comics offer a secure and enjoyable way to revisit that world, demonstrating the show’s lasting appeal and keeping its story alive.
Supernatural’s New Comic Series Is A Risk (But A Worthwhile One)
A new Supernatural comic series is on the way, which is great news for fans still hoping for a full reunion of the show. However, this event comes with some risk: it will separate Sam and Dean after an irreversible act by Sam towards his brother. This split begins in Supernatural: Wayward Special and continues into individual spinoff comics focusing on each character. The first two issues – Supernatural: Sam Winchester #1, created by Paulina Ganucheau and Kendall Goode, and Supernatural: Dean Winchester #1, from Chuck Brown and Rapha Lobosco – will be released in October.
The bond between the two brothers is central to the entire series. While Castiel later joined them, becoming a key part of the team, Sam and Dean always remained the emotional core of the show. The finale was controversial because it killed Dean during a hunt, sending him to Heaven and leaving Sam to live out his life on Earth before they were finally reunited in the afterlife.
The core of the show has always been Sam and Dean working as a team, so the comics are taking a significant risk by separating them for such a major storyline. It’s uncertain how fans will react. However, it will be fascinating to see how each brother navigates his own challenges and how this separation impacts their bond. Because this story is being told in comic form, the writers have more freedom to experiment.
Both new story ideas are really captivating: Sam finds himself investigating an abandoned town hidden in the Appalachian Mountains, while Dean is focused on solving a case his father left unfinished – even if it means taking drastic measures like killing a god. These stories will be linked together, and Dynamite Entertainment plans to continue following Sam and Dean’s adventures after this big event, so they won’t be apart for long. Just like in Supernatural, they always manage to reunite, both in the comics and potentially on television someday.
