Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is a huge fantasy series, but HBO now has a strong competitor. There’s plenty of quality fantasy TV available, including AMC’s Interview with the Vampire and its related shows, as well as Netflix’s adaptations of The Witcher and Castlevania. However, the massive success of HBO’s Game of Thrones, based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice & Fire, still dominates the fantasy genre.
I’ve noticed a trend with a lot of fantasy shows lately, like those based on Critical Role – The Legend of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein, and others. It seems like after Game of Thrones, most new shows are made for adults. Shows like Outlander on Starz, and even the upcoming Baldur’s Gate 3 series, aren’t holding back with violence, strong language, and mature themes. It’s like creators feel they can include anything they want now that they’re not aiming for a younger audience.
Even lighter fantasy shows, like the Game of Thrones spinoff A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, still often include violence and strong language. While it’s more cheerful than Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon, it doesn’t shy away from graphic content. Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is an exception, and now HBO’s new Harry Potter series has a chance to offer viewers another fantasy option that families can enjoy together.
HBO’s Harry Potter Reboot Series Can Be Their Rings of Power
HBO’s new Harry Potter series, similar to The Rings of Power, is based on a popular book series. Both shows are also reboots of huge movie franchises from the 2000s, and represent the first time these stories have been told as TV series. While the Harry Potter films were incredibly successful when they first came out, it’s been more than 15 years since the last movie was released in theaters.
The Fantastic Beasts films initially revived the Harry Potter franchise in cinemas, but disappointing reviews and box office results for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore caused Warner Bros. to abandon future plans for those movies. Now, HBO is hoping its new Harry Potter series will be a similar success to The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Like Rings of Power, it’s a very costly show based on a popular fantasy world, but it’s designed for a broader audience than mature-rated shows like Game of Thrones.
HBO’s Harry Potter Show Has One Huge Problem The Rings of Power Avoided
Fantasy fans have a lot to look forward to, and the upcoming HBO series appears poised to be a massive hit, given its significant budget and marketing. However, Prime Video’s Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has a key advantage. It’s exploring brand new stories and characters within the world of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, offering something fresh even for longtime fans.
HBO’s Harry Potter series is a direct retelling of the original movies, covering the same books in the same order. Because Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is a pretty standard children’s story without many surprises, it might be difficult to draw viewers in when a popular and well-regarded movie adaptation already exists.
The upcoming HBO series seems likely to follow the path of Prime Video’s Lord of the Rings remake – essentially retelling an existing story, rather than exploring new lore like Prime’s prequel, The Rings of Power. This is a problem because while many Lord of the Rings fans enjoy The Rings of Power as something fresh, the HBO Harry Potter show has already been criticized for simply revisiting well-known events.
