Warning! Spoilers for House of the Dragon season 3, episode 5, ahead!
As a huge fan, I was really hoping for some happiness in the latest episode of House of the Dragon, but honestly, it just ripped my heart out! Even though Rhaenyra finally got the Iron Throne, this season has been relentlessly sad. We just saw her lose Jacaerys in the Battle of the Gullet, which came after losing Lucerys way back in season one. And sadly, it seems like Rhaenyra’s struggles aren’t over yet – she keeps facing loss after loss.
Now that Jace and Luke are gone, Rhaenyra’s youngest son, Joffrey Velaryon, is next in line for the Iron Throne. Earlier in season 2 of House of the Dragon, Rhaenyra sent Joffrey to the Vale for safety, but after she took control of King’s Landing, she had him brought to her. This seemed like a normal move for a queen, and Rhaenyra appeared to see it that way. However, her distant behavior towards Joffrey in season 3, episode 5, is surprisingly unsettling.
It was difficult for the queen to send Joffrey away to the Vale. However, when she finds out in episode 5 that he’s safely back at the Red Keep, Rhaenyra postpones greeting him. Later in the episode, she goes to his room, but only briefly watches him sleep. This is unusual behavior for Rhaenyra, as she would normally want to hold her son close.
Rhaenyra’s Distance From Joffrey Reveals A Heartbreaking Truth
It breaks my heart to see how much distance there is between Rhaenyra and Joffrey. She truly understands the cost of claiming the Iron Throne – a price she’s already paying, and will likely continue to pay. Even though she’s currently Queen in King’s Landing, I can tell she knows things are incredibly unstable. The treasury is empty, people are suffering, and threats are closing in on all sides. Aemond and Aegon haven’t given up, Criston Cole’s army keeps advancing, and now Ormund Hightower is declaring Daeron Targaryen the rightful king from Tumbleton! Honestly, Rhaenyra seems to feel – and I fear she’s right – that Joffrey could be lost at any moment. It’s a terrifying situation.
As a huge fan of Game of Thrones, I’ve definitely seen characters go down this path before – that terrifying slide into becoming a ‘Mad Queen.’ And honestly, it feels like Rhaenyra knows she’s right on that edge. Another defeat, another loss of control, and I really think it could break her. Her only chance, as I see it, is to create some distance between herself and Joffrey. She needs to protect herself before it’s too late.
Rhaenyra has recently become rather superstitious, with Daemon pointing out she often sees signs where there are none, though she continues to look for them. She’s keenly aware that Joffrey is her last son with the late Ser Harwin Strong, and she worries about the fate of all her illegitimate children. Rhaenyra fears Jace and Luke’s deaths may be a consequence of their birth, and she suspects the gods might not allow a bastard to rule. This leads her to believe Joffrey won’t have a peaceful future either.
What Happens To Joffrey Velaryon In George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood
It’s unclear if the deaths of Jace and Luke were caused by the old gods or the new. However, the short life of their half-brother, who also failed to claim the Iron Throne, is telling. As described in Martin’s Fire & Blood, a revolt in King’s Landing led to an attack on the Dragonpit. Joffrey, fearing for his dragon Tyraxes, pleaded with his mother, Rhaenyra, to let him help. She refused, but Joffrey, like his older brother, disobeyed her.
It was awful watching Joffrey try to help his brother, Tyraxes. He impulsively jumped on Syrax, Rhaenyra’s dragon, hoping to get to the Dragonpit and keep Tyraxes safe from the crowds. But dragons are so particular – they won’t just let anyone ride them! Poor Joffrey was thrown off immediately and fell into Flea Bottom. I heard he broke his back and died there, being comforted by a sweet girl named Robin who made candles. His last words were supposedly, ‘Mother, forgive me.’ It’s just heartbreaking.
Even if Rhaenyra tries to distance herself emotionally, it probably won’t lessen the pain of this loss. If the show follows the established story, we can expect Rhaenyra to be devastated as another son dies because of the ongoing conflict between the Black and Green factions. Ultimately, Aegon Targaryen, Rhaenyra’s eldest surviving son, will become king. Sadly, fate will prevent both Rhaenyra and her older sons from witnessing his reign.
