Brad Dourif Vows to Keep Voicing Chucky Forever After Retirement

Brad Dourif, known for his role in Child’s Play, has largely retired from acting. However, he’s determined to continue voicing his iconic character, even with rumors of a new reboot circulating.

Brad Dourif has voiced the iconic Chucky since the original Child’s Play film in 1988, and he recently reprised the role for a television series. While the future of the Child’s Play franchise is uncertain, most fans expect the killer doll to return in some form. Dourif was recently at the Spooky Empire convention in Orlando, where a fan asked him if he planned to retire from voicing Chucky, as he’s “mostly retired” now.

Brad Dourif Is Not Passing the Torch

Dourif stated, with a touch of pride, that he was the only one currently voicing the character Chucky, which was met with a strong positive reaction from the audience.

Brad Dourif, age 76, shared that he was stepping away from acting after the cancellation of the Chucky series in 2024. He explained to JoBlo that he only agreed to participate in the Chucky series for two special reasons: his daughter, Fiona Dourif, was involved, and he considers the series creator, Don Mancini, a close friend and family member after many years working together on the Chucky franchise.

Brad Dourif has largely retired from acting, focusing solely on his work with the Chucky franchise. He made one recent exception to appear in HBO’s The Pitt, starring his daughter Fiona Dourif as Dr. Cassie McKay. He had a brief cameo as Cassie’s father, and this marks his final on-screen performance.

When Will Chucky Return to the Screen?

Don Mancini is planning to bring Chucky back to the big screen after his recent TV series concluded. He’s revealed a new film is in development, set within the ‘Chucky’ universe, and he’s aiming for a theatrical release. It’s been nearly two decades since Chucky last appeared in cinemas – the 2004 film ‘Seed of Chucky’ – with later installments going straight to streaming. With horror movies currently performing well in theaters, a new ‘Chucky’ film is likely to be approved, though official confirmation is still pending.

Brad Dourif will likely continue to voice Chucky whenever the character reappears in movies or TV shows, as long as those projects stay within the established continuity. It’s worth remembering that Mark Hamill voiced a different version of Chucky in the 2019 Child’s Play remake, which wasn’t connected to the original series, and there haven’t been any signs of another standalone reboot being planned.
