Award-winning director Kane Parsons shares his plans for the future of the series in a new interview. He details his ideal vision, and it’s truly exciting.
I recently spoke with director Kane Parsons about the future of Backrooms, and it sounds like the film isn’t a one-off. He told me that sequels have been planned since 2022 – it’s not just a possibility, it’s the core intention for the franchise, going beyond the original movie and the popular YouTube series that inspired it.
What the Future of the Backrooms Will Look Like According to Director Kane Parsons
Parsons shared that the idea for the independent horror film grew from a YouTube series he’d taken as far as it could go. He initially expected a feature film to be a much longer process, but it ended up accelerating the project. This film is intended to be the first of many installments, allowing him to fully explore the core concept – something he believes wouldn’t be possible within the constraints of a single movie.
Personally, I’d love to see this developed into a series,” Parsons said. He explained that the story he wants to tell needs more room to unfold than what’s been shown so far. He also described the unique genre blend of Backrooms, saying it’s less about fitting neatly into one category and more of a character-driven drama with supernatural and technological thriller elements. “That’s the kind of space I really want to explore with this,” he added.
The Record-Breaking Success of Backrooms — Explained
The film Backrooms, directed by Parsons and written by Will Soodik, premiered in theaters on May 29th and quickly became a box office hit. The movie is based on the popular online story that originated in a 2019 thread on 4chan, and centers around a seemingly endless and mysterious alternate dimension filled with both wonder and terror.
The new film Backrooms earned $38.4 million on its opening day and is on track to make between $80 and $88 million domestically for its opening weekend. This makes its director the youngest ever to achieve such box office success, surpassing a record recently set just two weeks earlier by 26-year-old Curry Barker with his film Obsession.
The movie has been a huge success, both financially and with critics. As of today, Rotten Tomatoes gives Backrooms an 89% “Certified Fresh” rating based on 171 reviews from professional critics. Viewers seem to enjoy it too, giving it a 74% score on the site’s “Popcornmeter” after over 1,000 ratings.
Backrooms is in theaters now.
