The Most Important Dragon Ball Bloodlines, Ranked

Since its release in 1984, this series has played a huge role in making anime and manga popular around the world. Created by Akira Toriyama, it became a defining example of the shonen genre, largely thanks to its memorable characters and diverse, powerful groups.

The Dragon Ball series features many powerful groups, from the Saiyans to Frieza’s clan, and these groups are home to some of the most significant characters in the story. These families and bloodlines have dramatically shaped the series and become legendary over time.

The Brief Family Spawned the Capsule Corporation

At the start of Dragon Ball, Goku is a naive boy living with his adoptive grandfather, Grandpa Gohan, deep in the forest. His peaceful life is disrupted when he’s unexpectedly hit by Bulma, the daughter of the wealthy and innovative Brief family who own Capsule Corporation.

Although Goku and Bulma’s first meeting was uneventful, their friendship became central to the story of Dragon Ball. This was largely thanks to Bulma’s family, the Briefs. From the Dragon Radar to spaceships and even time machines, Bulma and her father, Dr. Brief, invented many of the key tools Goku and his friends relied on throughout their adventures.

Without the Brief family, Goku might never have collected all the Dragon Balls, gone to Namek, or even met characters like Trunks. They’ve had a huge influence on the story, especially since they later became family with another important lineage in the Dragon Ball universe.

The Vegeta Clan Led the Saiyans Through Near-Extinction

Within the world of Dragon Ball, the Saiyans are arguably the most important race. Their Super Saiyan transformation was a game-changer for action anime, so it’s fitting that the Saiyan royal family is one of the most important bloodlines in the whole story.

I remember learning that Vegeta and his father, King Vegeta, used to rule Planet Vegeta before Frieza destroyed it. Even though the planet and most of their people were gone, Vegeta’s strength and lineage have kept the Saiyan race alive. He may not be officially king like his father was, but there’s a real possibility he could become one eventually – that’s saying something, considering how powerful everyone in Dragon Ball is!

Trunks is a hugely important character in the Dragon Ball story, impacting not just the plot of Dragon Ball Z, but the fate of the entire universe. His time travel in both DBZ and Dragon Ball Super was crucial; without it, the Z Fighters likely would have been defeated by the Androids, completely changing everything that happened afterward.

The Frieza Clan Have Terrorized the Universe for Centuries

When it comes to powerful and terrifying families in the world of Dragon Ball, the Frieza Clan stands above the rest. They’re famous for being ruthless galactic rulers, and many fans still consider them the franchise’s most iconic villains.

King Cold starts the Android Saga off well, but his son, Frieza, is a truly frightening villain in both DBZ and Dragon Ball Super. He’s also been the main enemy for the longest time in the entire Dragon Ball series. With his many different forms, he’s gone from a powerful galactic ruler to a being with god-like power, making the Frieza Clan one of the most significant families in the story.

Frieza and King Cold aren’t the only dangerous members of their family. Characters like Chilled, an ancestor of Frieza, and Frost, his counterpart from Universe 6, have also caused widespread fear and destruction. Even Cooler, who is considered semi-canon, proved to be a powerful enemy, challenging both Goku and Vegeta. This demonstrates the far-reaching and destructive power of the Frieza Clan.

The Namekians Are the Source of the Dragon Balls

When it comes to numbers, the Namekians are the largest family in the Dragon Ball universe. Though they might not be the first family fans think of, the series strongly implies that all Namekians are descended from a single ancestor.

As a Dragon Ball fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the Namekians! It’s incredible to think they reproduce asexually, laying eggs to create new Namekians. The Great Elder, it seems, was responsible for pretty much the entire population – meaning they’re all related! When you consider that, it really hits home how central and important the Namekian race is to the whole story. They’re basically one big family, and a hugely significant one at that!

The Dragon Balls are central to Goku’s story, repeatedly changing the course of events in the Dragon Ball franchise. Along with the Namekians – including characters like King Piccolo, Piccolo, Kami, and Dende – this race plays a hugely important role in the series.

Bardock, Goku, and Gohan Are Three of the Most Important Saiyans Ever

When discussing Dragon Ball characters, Son Goku is undoubtedly the most central figure. He’s the driving force behind the story, from the very beginning of Dragon Ball through to the end of Dragon Ball Super, making his family lineage incredibly important to the entire series.

Goku isn’t the only member of his family who’s played a big role in the Dragon Ball story. His father, Bardock, has been featured in several special episodes. Even ignoring those stories, Bardock is important because he led the first Saiyan uprising against Frieza. What’s even more significant is that he was the first Saiyan to transform into a Super Saiyan 2, and he essentially paved the way for Goku’s role in the fight against Buu.

Although Goten, Goku’s younger son, isn’t as central to the stories in Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super as Gohan is, he achieved a remarkable feat: becoming a Super Saiyan at just seven years old, proving his incredible potential. When you consider Gohan’s daughter, Pan, and Goku’s brother, Raditz, it’s clear that Goku’s family is the most significant one in the entire Dragon Ball universe.
