The first big animated movie of 2026 has been a hit, increasing the likelihood of a sequel – which is great news for fans! Even though we’re only halfway through the year and many more films are still to come, 2026 has already proven to be a strong year for animated movies.
Animated movies are performing incredibly well at the box office this year. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is currently the highest-grossing film worldwide with nearly $1 billion in earnings. Hop has also done very well, landing in 6th place with $371 million, and Goat is in 11th place with almost $200 million (according to Box Office Mojo).
The recent success of animated movies shows they’re a permanent and popular part of the film industry. It’s great to see that one of the year’s biggest animated hits has now achieved another win, increasing the chances of a follow-up movie.
Goat’s Netflix Record Makes A Sequel Look All The More Likely
With Goat earning $193 million worldwide (according to Box Office Mojo) and quickly exceeding $100 million, a sequel to the film seemed likely.
The film Goat continues to perform well, currently ranking among Netflix’s top 10 most-watched movies globally, according to official data from Tudum. This demonstrates the enduring popularity of the film’s story and setting, and suggests a sequel could attract an even larger audience and enjoy similar long-term success.
The success of Goat on streaming could be a key factor in getting a sequel made. Strong streaming numbers demonstrate that a follow-up could be profitable even after its initial release, proving its potential as a worthwhile investment.
Goat’s Ending Means A Sequel Would Make Perfect Sense
The ending of Goat definitely hinted at the possibility of a follow-up, making its popularity on streaming services even more interesting. Although the film concludes with the roarball tournament – where the main character, Will, and his team, the Vineland Thorns, win and take ownership thanks to Florence Everson selling the team – their story feels like it’s just getting started.
Now that the Vineland Thorns have successfully come together as a team, a movie about them navigating their differences while still working well together feels like a natural fit. Plus, there’s plenty of potential for future stories, exploring other teams, competitions, and storylines within the same universe.
With the first Goat movie leaving the door open for more stories, its strong performance at the box office – earning significantly more than its $80 million production cost according to Deadline – and positive results on streaming platforms, a sequel seems like a great idea. However, whether a second film actually happens remains to be seen.
