EC Comics is revisiting wartime stories with a new anthology comic called Shell Shock #1. This 56-page issue will be available in comic shops this August.
Shell Shock #1 is a new comic book from Oni Press, continuing their project of bringing back beloved titles from classic EC Comics. Oni has already successfully re-released several issues of titles like Epitaphs From the Abyss and Cruel Universe, and they’re now exploring a wide variety of genres.
If you’ve enjoyed thrilling tales like SHIVER SUSPENSTORIES, OUTLAW SHOWDOWN, and TORTURED HEARTS, prepare yourself for something even more intense. SHELLSHOCK, a new series arriving August 19th, plunges you into the brutal reality of war, where the greatest enemy isn’t ‘them’ – it’s the toll it takes on those who fight. Award-winning writers Julio Anta, John Arcudi, Benito Cereno, and Michael W. Conrad team up with incredible artists Tom Fowler, David Lapham, Albert Monteys, and Shawn Martinbrough to deliver a powerful story about the shared fate of soldiers, both friend and foe. In the end, everyone receives the same reward: a hero’s burial. This special 56-page issue also includes remastered and restored classic content!
War Has Always Existed in Comic Book Form
EC Comics is excited to be back! We’re teaming up with Oni Press to bring the classic EC style to today’s readers. It’s been a long-held goal to share the bold creativity of EC with a new generation, and we’re thrilled to be doing it with Oni’s talented team and a fantastic group of creators. We’re finally bringing EC Comics into the 21st century with brand new series and stories,” said Corey Mifsud of William M. Gaines Agent, Inc. in a statement from Oni Press.
EC Comics, originally established in 1944, was famous for its collections of short stories in comic book form. Many renowned artists, such as Steve Ditko, Wally Wood, and Harvey Kurtzman, contributed to these comics. A recent revival of the series has also attracted top talent, including writers Jason Aaron, Matt Kindt, and Stephanie Phillips.
I remember when war comics were huge! Titles like Sgt. Rock, The ‘Nam, Blazing Combat, and Enemy Ace were, and still are, considered some of the best the genre has to offer. It felt like it was only a matter of time before we started seeing those kinds of stories back in comic shops, and I’m really glad we are!
Shell Shock #1 is available on Aug. 19 wherever comic books are sold.
