James Gunn recently discussed what sets the DC Universe apart from other franchises such as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s worth mentioning that Gunn has directed all three Guardians of the Galaxy films for Marvel and is now working alongside his long-time producing partner Peter Safran as co-head at DC Studios.
James Gunn reflects on the world-building for DCU
During a conversation with Rainn Wilson for Interview Magazine, Gunn delved into the unique aspects of constructing the universe in the DCU, highlighting differences compared to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and other well-known franchises.
When asked about his involvement in creating the DCU, the filmmaker explained that it was a significant factor in accepting the job. He admires George R.R. Martin greatly, considering him as one of his idols. The filmmaker is an avid fan of Martin’s works and acknowledges comparisons between the DCU and the MCU.
The filmmaker noted, “For me, the appeal of the Game of Thrones or Star Wars universe goes beyond just creating a world. Instead, we construct an entire universe and then focus on crafting separate tales from within this broader narrative.
James Gunn’s initial DC venture was the 2021 movie “The Suicide Squad,” which was a part of the DCEU. Despite facing struggles at the box office due to factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the film garnered positive reviews from critics. Following this, Gunn produced two seasons of “Peacemaker” and one season of “Creature Commandos,” and is set to direct 2025’s Superman movie. All these projects, including “Superman,” “Peacemaker Season 2,” and “Creature Commandos,” now fall under the umbrella of the DC Universe (DCU).
When Wilson inquired about what sets the DCU apart as a brand, Gunn highlighted that unlike real-world cities such as New York and Los Angeles, this fictional universe features Metropolis, Evergreen, and Coast City. He further explained, “It’s a distinct world where superheroes, known as Metahumans, have been around for over 300 years and have significantly impacted our lives.
