Amazon has always been willing to invest heavily in original shows for Prime Video. They’ve created big-budget series like the superhero drama The Boys, the post-apocalyptic adventure Fallout, and the historical drama The Man in the High Castle, consistently approaching television with the scale of a major movie. However, even with all these impressive shows, one fantasy series stands out as Amazon’s most ambitious project yet.
No streaming series, including those on Prime Video, rivals the epic scope of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The show takes place thousands of years before The Lord of the Rings, depicting the Second Age of Middle-earth—a time of Sauron’s ascent, the creation of the Rings of Power, and the collapse of kingdoms. From the start, it was designed to be a major, long-running fantasy series, and it continues to deliver on that promise.
As a huge fan of fantasy, I’m really excited about season 3 of The Rings of Power coming this November! But it sounds like Amazon isn’t waiting to see how it performs before planning ahead. Apparently, they’ve already started early work on season 4! Honestly, given how much money and effort they’ve poured into the whole Lord of the Rings series, it’s not a big surprise. It’s a massive undertaking, and very few shows demand this kind of long-term commitment – and even fewer companies could just abandon it halfway through.
The Scale Of Rings Of Power Almost Defies Belief
It’s no exaggeration to say that The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is incredibly costly. The first season is officially the most expensive TV show ever made, reportedly costing a staggering $465 million (according to The Hollywood Reporter). That doesn’t even include the $250 million Amazon spent just to obtain the rights to Tolkien’s work. Instead of reducing spending after the initial release, Amazon invested even more in season 2, with production costs reaching another $458 million (via LRM Online).
It’s hard to grasp just how much money went into this show compared to other fantasy series – most wouldn’t spend nearly as much. To put it in perspective, the final season of Game of Thrones cost around $90 million to make (according to Business Insider). But Amazon didn’t let that stop them, and The Rings of Power keeps breaking spending records. The show was filmed in several countries, uses a huge amount of visual effects, and recreates the world of Middle-earth with a level of detail you usually only see in movies.
With such a huge financial commitment, The Rings of Power was always a big risk for Amazon. They were hoping it would be as popular as Game of Thrones, but there was no certainty viewers would respond the same way. Fantasy fans are known for being hard to please, especially when it comes to adaptations of The Lord of the Rings. However, after investing nearly a billion dollars over two seasons, canceling the show was becoming less and less likely.
Amazon has already put a huge amount of money, resources, and planning into The Rings of Power, so they’re very likely to continue the show. Even though some viewers haven’t loved it, canceling now would result in one of the largest financial failures ever for a TV series. Extending the story past season three makes sense both from a creative standpoint and because it’s essential for the company’s finances.
Rings Of Power Needs Time To Tell Its Story
From the start, reactions to The Rings of Power have been all over the place. It quickly sparked a lot of heated debate among fantasy TV fans, with people feeling very strongly for and against it. Viewers have intensely scrutinized every detail, from how characters like Galadriel are portrayed to the unveiling of Sauron’s true identity, likely because they’re so passionate about Tolkien’s world. But it’s still too soon to say for sure whether the show is a success or not.
Unlike many streaming shows today that focus on fast-paced plots and shorter episodes, The Rings of Power was designed as a sprawling, epic fantasy. Amazon intended it to span five seasons, so the major stories are deliberately developing gradually. This slower approach could actually be a strength for the series in the long run.
Many popular fantasy TV shows took time to become great, and The Rings of Power is still developing. The upcoming third season, arriving in November, could significantly change how people view the show. Regardless of current opinions, the story isn’t finished yet. It’s best to wait until the entire series concludes before making a final judgment on this ambitious undertaking.
