Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for The Boys season 5 finale, “Blood and Bone.”
From the beginning, the core group in The Boys has been determined to defeat Homelander and the other dangerous villains they face, so it wasn’t shocking when they finally achieved victory in the finale. Ultimately, Billy Butcher delivered the final blow, killing the now-weakened Homelander with a crowbar in The Boys.
Butcher always seemed incredibly dangerous, with or without his superpowers, leading many viewers to believe he was the most formidable member of The Boys. However, that title actually belongs to Mother’s Milk, especially as the show progresses into season 5. While Kimiko and Starlight are also powerful, it’s MM who consistently proves to be the most lethal member of the team.
Throughout most of the show, MM appeared to be one of the most ethical characters. However, in season 5 of The Boys, his time in the Starlight internment camp left him feeling hopeless, dramatically changing his personality. He became much more pessimistic and willing to do whatever it took, even killing several superpowered individuals.
In the live-action series, Mother’s Milk doesn’t have any superpowers, even when some of The Boys used Temp V, including in season 3. Despite this, he impressively defeated three superpowered individuals on his own in season 5. His first victory was against Love Sausage, an enemy he’d been pursuing for a long time, and they finally had a face-off in the season premiere.
Despite being the underdog, MM defeated Love Sausage by a surprising and lethal maneuver. He then faced Sheline in a difficult battle, ultimately using a rat as a distraction to deliver a fatal overdose with multiple needles, ending her threat.
In the final confrontation, he ultimately killed Oh Father, though not without help. While Hughie kept the villain occupied, MM forced a specially designed gag into his mouth. This gag was intended to withstand Oh Father’s powerful sonic scream, but the immense pressure instead caused his head to explode.
While Butcher took down major figures like Victoria Neuman and Homelander, and Starlight was responsible for Cindy’s death and accidentally caused harm to The Deep, the fact that MM accomplished all of his kills on his own, without any superpowers, makes him the most dangerous member of The Boys.
MM Being So Deadly Fits His Season 5 Character Arc
MM has always been committed to the team’s goals and willing to do what’s necessary, but season 5 revealed a much more ruthless side of him, making his actions feel justified. Instead of being the calm, rational leader the group relied on, he became similar to a second Billy Butcher in the final episodes.
He largely agreed with the leader of The Boys and clearly believed it was a fight to the death – that’s why he ended up killing several powerful superhumans. While his fear of never seeing his family again definitely influenced his darker decisions, considering the dangerous situation, his transformation felt justified.
Throughout the fifth season, Starlight often seemed more direct, but like Mother’s Milk, she ultimately wanted to make a positive impact. The story behind Mother’s Milk’s nickname in The Boys revealed his long-standing desire to help others and do what’s right, a trait that stayed with him even as his personality became more aggressive.
Even though he was acting harsher and seemed less enthusiastic about using the virus, he still rescued Countess Crow earlier in the season and risked his own safety to protect people. This made him feel like the same character we’d been following for four seasons, just a more hardened version.
It was good to see him become so skilled at fighting superpowered individuals, as it highlighted how truly frightening he is when he isn’t restraining himself. This makes the idea of him gaining powers himself even more unsettling. If he ever became as ruthless as the villains he fights, Butcher could become a major threat within the world of The Boys.
Throughout the series, he consistently stood up for what he believed in, and considering all he’s endured, his willingness to be more forceful felt earned. While he ultimately seemed to return to his core self by the end, his defeat of ‘Father’ proved that he was, without a doubt, the most dangerous of the main heroes in the final season – a fitting conclusion to his character arc.
