25 TV Shows With The Most Nudity

Shows featuring a lot of nudity are often the most talked-about in television history, frequently sparking controversy due to their explicit content and willingness to challenge limits. Although nudity is now more common on TV, certain shows remain memorable for how much skin they show.

American television first showed nudity in a scripted program in 1973 with a brief glimpse of a man’s backside on MASH*. Over the next decade, many shows started featuring female nudity, and channels like HBO, Cinemax, and Showtime became well-known for it.

Despite growing openness about sexuality, American television networks remain under the control of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The FCC prohibits the broadcast of indecent content and can issue significant fines to networks that violate this rule. For example, in 2008, ABC was proposed a $1.43 million fine for a 2003 episode of NYPD Blue that briefly showed a partially nude woman.

Without the restrictions of the FCC’s rules about inappropriate content, nudity on television isn’t considered shocking anymore. Popular shows like Game of Thrones have proven this, attracting huge audiences and making sex on TV much more common than it used to be.

Banshee (2013–2016)

Before becoming famous as Homelander in The Boys, Antony Starr starred in the Cinemax action series Banshee. In the show, he plays a man who gets out of prison after 15 years for stealing diamonds from a Ukrainian mob boss. Because he and his girlfriend kept the diamonds, he goes into hiding, assuming a new identity as Lucas Hood, the sheriff of a small town.

The action drama Banshee features frequent nudity and explicit sexual content, which was a hallmark of the Cinemax network. Nudity appears in almost every episode.

Rome (2005-2007)

HBO’s Rome premiered in the mid-2000s, a time when the network was producing some of its most popular and highly-rated shows. The series is a historical drama that follows the transformation of Rome from a republic to an empire.

The HBO series Rome featured a large ensemble cast and received critical acclaim, winning 11 Emmy Awards over its two seasons. While initially known for its explicit nudity, these scenes became less frequent in the second season. Though not as excessive as Game of Thrones, Rome still contains numerous scenes of both male and female nudity and sexual content.

Euphoria (2019-Present)

Since its debut on HBO, Euphoria has sparked a lot of debate, but it’s also been a big hit for the network. The show’s controversial nature comes from its realistic and often graphic portrayal of issues like drug use, sex, and violence among high school students.

Zendaya plays Rue, a teenager struggling with drug addiction. The show follows her after she leaves rehab, but she quickly relapses. It doesn’t shy away from difficult topics, including overdoses, sexual assault, and domestic abuse. The series also features explicit sexual content and nudity, which can be disturbing given the sensitive and often traumatic events depicted.

Westworld (2016-2022)

The HBO series Westworld is based on the 1973 film of the same name. It’s set in futuristic amusement parks populated by lifelike robots who play the roles of characters that guests can interact with. The first season took place in a Wild West setting, but the show evolved into a more broadly dystopian science fiction story in later seasons.

The show received excellent reviews and won multiple Emmys for its acting and writing. Being an HBO production, it initially featured a significant amount of nudity, especially in its first season, as the premise involved a wild west-themed park with frequent intimate scenes. However, this decreased noticeably in the second season. Surprisingly, despite being an HBO show, Westworld is no longer available to stream on HBO Max.

Harlots (2017-2019)

As a period drama fan, I recently checked out Harlots on Hulu, and it’s pretty fascinating. It’s set in 1760s London and really dives into the world of brothels – so be warned, there’s a good amount of nudity. The story centers around Margaret Wells, who runs one of these brothels, and it’s a constant struggle for her to protect her business and her girls. She’s up against all sorts of opposition, from the authorities to religious groups, making it a surprisingly tense and dramatic watch.

The series features frequent intimate scenes, including nudity from all sides. Despite this, it’s a feminist production that portrays women powerfully and avoids exploiting them through these scenes.

P-Valley (2020-Present)

Where To Watch: Starz

P-Valley, a Starz series based on Katori Hall’s play Pussy Valley, has become a huge hit, earning a 95% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The show centers on the lives of the dancers at The Pynk, a club in Mississippi, and explores the challenges and triumphs they experience both inside and outside of work.

As you’d expect from a show set in a club, P-Valley features nudity, but it’s not overly graphic. It feels natural to the show’s setting and isn’t used exploitatively, though some viewers might find it excessive. While season 2 came out in 2022, a third season is currently being developed.

Vinyl (2016)

Vinyl is an HBO television series created by Mick Jagger, Martin Scorsese, and others. It’s a drama set in the 1970s, starring Bobby Cannavale as a record company executive. Unfortunately, the show was canceled after only one season, consisting of 10 episodes.

The show explores the shift in music from rock to punk and disco, and vividly portrays the excessive drug use and sexual activity of the time. Vinyl gained attention for a graphic nude scene in its premiere, and features nudity throughout the series—including topless scenes—though it’s generally less explicit than what’s found in many other shows with similar content.

Carnival Row (2019-2023)

Amazon Prime Video launched its fantasy series, Carnival Row, in 2019. The show features Orlando Bloom as a detective investigating a violent murder. His investigation quickly focuses on a newcomer to the city – one of a group of mythical creatures who were forced to leave their home because of a war.

Ordinary people distrust them, and as more bodies turn up, it risks escalating tensions and violence between the two groups. Carnival Row features frequent nudity, including full and partial views of women, as well as rear nudity in some sex scenes involving men.

The Deuce (2017-2019)

Where To Watch: HBO Max

HBO’s The Deuce stars James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal in a drama set in 1970s New York City. The series explores the city’s growing drug problem and the rise of the porn industry. Gyllenhaal plays Eileen, a woman formerly known as Candy Renee, who enters the adult film world.

The series follows Franco, a man who lives a double life as both Vincent and Frankie, acting as a public face for the Mafia. It was critically acclaimed, earning Jake Gyllenhaal a Golden Globe nomination. The show features significant nudity due to its focus on the adult film industry, including full-frontal scenes involving both male and female performers.

Oz (1997-2003)

Debuting in 1997, Oz was among HBO’s earliest dramatic series and paved the way for the network’s later, highly praised shows. Set in a maximum-security prison in New York, the show explores the lives of both the inmates and the correctional officers who work there. The series boasts a fantastic cast, including Ernie Hudson, Harold Perrineau, Kirk Acevedo, J.K. Simmons, Dean Winters, Rita Moreno, and many other talented actors.

While the show does feature a lot of nudity, it’s notable for one key reason: it primarily showcases graphic male nudity, potentially more than any other TV series ever.
