A key character appears to have been unexpectedly written out of the Apple TV+ series, For All Mankind, without any explanation. The show, which premiered in 2019, quickly became one of Apple TV+’s most popular original programs. Created by Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert, and Ben Nedivi, this science fiction series presents a fascinating alternate history where the Soviet Union beat the United States to the moon, and it’s inspired by the real people who participated in the Space Race.
The large and talented cast of For All Mankind has made it one of Apple TV+’s biggest hits. While the show features actors like Joel Kinnaman, Michael Dorman, and Shantel VanSanten, it’s not afraid to change things up over its many seasons. Most of the original characters have had satisfying conclusions to their stories – recently, even Ed Baldwin (Kinnaman) – but one character hasn’t received the same thoughtful ending.
Margo Madison Has Been Largely Absent From For All Mankind Season 5
Margo Madison, a brilliant NASA engineer and mentored by Wernher von Braun (Colm Feore), is the central figure in “Red Moon.” She played a key role in the Apollo 8 mission and drew inspiration from Margaret Hamilton, the developer of the Apollo Guidance Program’s flight software. Margo eventually made history as NASA’s first female director.
Margo Madison is a key character in For All Mankind who has undergone significant growth, but she’s been largely missing from Season 5. Throughout the series, as head of the Johnson Space Center, she guided Aleida Rosales, played a vital role in lunar and Martian landings, and established important relationships with the Soviets, particularly with Sergei Nikulov. Unfortunately, these Soviet connections ultimately led to her being falsely accused of treason and imprisoned.
By Season 5, Margo is still offering advice and scientific help to Aleida Rosales, even while incarcerated. After successfully persuading Aleida to go to Mars to manage the Titan mission, Margo’s role in For All Mankind seemed to end. She hasn’t appeared since Episode 3 of Season 5, “Home,” which was a moving and well-crafted episode.
Most of For All Mankind’s Main Characters Have Had Emotional Send-Offs (But Some Have Been Forgotten)
It’s disappointing that Margo Madison’s exit from For All Mankind didn’t receive the same thoughtful treatment as other major characters’ departures. For example, when Ed Baldwin died – despite his health problems – he sacrificed himself to save Lee Jung-Gil. His farewell spanned an entire episode, and included appearances from past characters like Gordo Stevens and Karen Baldwin.
Gordo and his former wife, Tracy Jones, experienced a poignant conclusion to their story, and have been remembered fondly since. Molly Cobb, the first American woman in space, is honored with the Molly Cobb Space Center. Ellen Wilson ultimately found happiness, becoming the first openly gay President. Characters like Deke Slayton, Gene Kranz, and Danny Stevens all received fitting farewells as well.
Unfortunately, several important characters haven’t received satisfying conclusions to their stories, and Margo Madison is the most recent example. Despite a brief appearance, Danielle Poole – a real-life NASA astronaut and one of the first African American women to go to space – hasn’t gotten a proper farewell. Bill Strausser, Larry Wilson, Jimmy Stevens, and others have also been left without closure.
Perhaps the most heartbreaking part of the show was the lack of a proper goodbye for Margo Madison. As a pioneer at NASA in the 1960s and ’70s, she was a central figure in For All Mankind. While she might still appear in the Season 5 finale, “This Land Is Our Land,” or even in future seasons set in the 2020s, her departure from the series has been a real loss.
