The Prime Video series Spider-Noir features a diverse group of comic book villains, and writer Oren Uziel deliberately chose some lesser-known characters for a specific purpose.
A new series is launching a fresh Marvel world centered around Nicolas Cage as Ben Reilly, a detective in 1930s New York. He used to be a vigilante known as The Spider, and a dangerous case forces him to take on that identity again. This brings him into conflict with updated versions of classic villains like Sandman, Tombstone, Silvermane, and Megawatt, among others.
Before the series debuted, Grant Hermanns from ScreenRant spoke with Oren Uziel about Spider-Noir. Uziel, the creator and co-showrunner, explained that when selecting villains from the Spider-Man comics, his main focus was determining how well they would fit the show’s noir setting.
Because of this, the creative team, including co-showrunner Steve Lightfoot (who also worked on The Punisher), first concentrated on developing the story they wanted to tell. This approach naturally led them to consider who could serve as Ben Reilly’s antagonist. Uziel explained that choosing the villain felt like a fortunate problem to have, given the wealth of options available.
What’s great about Marvel is its long history and huge number of characters. With TV, you can either reimagine a popular character or, even more excitingly, take a lesser-known one and really develop their story. I had a lot of fun exploring the Marvel universe to find the right character to work with.
Most Spider-Man stories, whether in comics or adapted for other media, feature a small group of classic villains like Green Goblin, Venom, Doctor Octopus, and Vulture. The Spider-Noir games also include some of these major villains, such as Jack Huston’s Sandman (Flint Marko) and Abraham Popoola’s Tombstone (Lonnie Lincoln).
The marketing for Spider-Noir revealed the Prime Video series would focus on lesser-known villains. While Brendan Gleeson’s Silvermane remains a mob boss, the show reimagines him with Irish heritage instead of Italian, and removes his rivalry with Kingpin. Similarly, Andrew Lewis Caldwell plays Megawatt, marking the character’s first on-screen appearance, but the series departs from his established backstory as an Australian actor turned criminal, portraying him simply as a robber.
Uziel’s approach to choosing villains in Spider-Noir seems a bit unusual, but it looks like he’s setting up his own version of the Sinister Six. Typically, having so many villains in a Spider-Man story is done either to establish them for a future team-up, or to create an immediate, large-scale threat for Spider-Man.
It will be fascinating to see which lesser-known comic book villains Uziel chooses to feature in Spider-Noir. While Hammerhead isn’t exactly obscure, he hasn’t appeared in any live-action adaptations yet, and his 1920s gangster look would be perfect for the show’s style. The Enforcers, a group of villains, would also be a great addition, complementing both the dark, noir atmosphere and the show’s sense of humor.
Right now, it’s uncertain if Spider-Noir will continue. Neither Prime Video nor MGM+ has announced any plans for the show. However, given its high profile and connection to a major franchise, it seems likely the streaming services would be interested in a second season if the first one attracts enough viewers.
Spider-Noir begins streaming on Prime Video on May 27.
