It’s always interesting when comedians take on roles in superhero movies, and Lamorne Morris is a great example. Interestingly, Morris isn’t the only actor from the show New Girl to appear in something connected to Spider-Man.
Morris playfully teased his former colleague, Jake Johnson, about his role as the superhero in the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Sean O’Connell wondered if the Robbie Robertson from his acclaimed 2018 animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse would get along with the Robbie Robertson portrayed by the actor in a different universe. After jokingly teasing his friend, he explained that the potential relationship reminded him of how his character interacted with Nicolas Cage’s Ben Reilly in Spider-Noir.
“Jake Johnson’s interpretation of Peter Parker is stupid. No, I was speaking of Jake. I’m sorry.
I really believe Robbie and Peter would have a similar dynamic. Robbie is completely focused on his work and solving the case – he’s a serious journalist who doesn’t put up with nonsense. Peter, especially the version played by Jake Johnson, often seems unsure of what he’s doing and a bit lost. I think Robbie’s approach would be to help get Peter back on the right path.
In Spider-Noir, Oscar winner Nicolas Cage plays a live-action version of the 1930s detective-style Spider-Man he previously voiced in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. But this version of the character, originally created by writers David Hine and Fabrice Sapolsky and artist Carmine Di Giandomenico, is an older, retired private investigator who stopped being the crime-fighting hero known as “The Spider” long ago.
Reilly’s friend, Robertson, a driven freelance journalist, is trying to help him get his life back on track. This version of Robertson is a reimagining of a classic Marvel character. The original Robbie Robertson first appeared in 1967’s The Amazing Spider-Man #51, created by Stan Lee and John Romita Jr., and acted as a mentor to Peter Parker while working as a reporter for the Daily Bugle.
According to Morris’ account, his take on the Robbie character could really help Peter B. Parker, who was struggling during the events of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. While Peter seems to be in a better place now – having made amends with Mary Jane Watson and started a family, as shown in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse – it would be amazing to see Nick Miller and Winston Bishop from New Girl appear together in the Marvel Multiverse, even briefly.
Lamorne Morris’ Journey To Spider-Noir
Lamorne Morris is just one example of many actors who found success after starting on sitcoms. Chris Pratt was well-known for his role in Parks and Recreation before becoming a leading man in Guardians of the Galaxy, and even Michael Keaton, before playing Batman, starred in a couple of short-lived TV comedies in the late 70s and early 80s.
Since his breakout role on the show New Girl, which ended in 2018, Morris has shown he’s capable of more than just comedy. Before playing Spider-Noir, he first appeared in a comic book movie, Bloodshot (2020), alongside Vin Diesel, playing the British tech expert Wilfred Wigans – though his role was mainly for comedic effect.
He quickly proved his acting range in 2024 with a compelling performance on the fourth season of the FX series, Fargo. He played a North Dakota State Trooper investigating a mysterious woman who saved his life, earning him a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie.
Morris’s successful career led to the chance to play Robbie Robertson in Spider-Noir, a highly anticipated film that’s already receiving great reviews before its release on Amazon Prime Video. Viewers can choose how they want to experience it, but Jack Huston, who plays Sandman, recommends one option in particular.
Spider-Noir premieres on Amazon Prime Video on Wednesday, May 27, but is available now on MGM+.
