Leonardo DiCaprio was once set to star as Travis McGee, the character who inspired Lee Child’s popular Jack Reacher. The Jack Reacher novels have been bestsellers for over two decades, and the Prime Video series has brought the books to an even wider audience. A unique aspect of the series is that each book features a fresh start – Reacher remains consistent, but always investigates new crimes in different locations.
To highlight this shift, the next season of Reacher will be a complete change of pace, focusing on a political conspiracy. Author Lee Child has frequently discussed his inspiration for Reacher, explaining that he wanted to create a hero unlike the jaded detectives common in 1990s thrillers.
The main character is a wanderer, moving from place to place without being burdened by past trauma or addiction. The author has mentioned several books and characters that inspired him, notably Sherlock Holmes. However, the biggest influence seems to be the Travis McGee series by John D. MacDonald, which features a detective who solves problems while living a relaxed, beachside life.
People turn to McGee when they’ve been robbed or defrauded and have nowhere else to go. He recovers their stolen goods, but takes half the value as payment. According to Reacher: The Stories Behind the Stories, Lee Child greatly admired the books featuring McGee and used many of McGee’s characteristics when creating Jack Reacher. Both men are loners who prefer to avoid conflict and live outside the mainstream, but they’re willing to put themselves at risk to help others.
Leonardo DiCaprio Nearly Played Jack Reacher’s Inspiration Travis McGee
The Travis McGee character has been portrayed on screen twice. Rod Taylor played McGee in the 1970 film Darker Than Amber, and Sam Elliott took on the role in the 1983 TV movie Travis McGee. That TV movie was intended to be the start of a series, but it never materialized. More recently, around 2010, Leonardo DiCaprio, known for rarely appearing in sequels, agreed to star in a film adaptation of The Deep Blue Good-By, the first book in the McGee series, directed by Oliver Stone.
Similar to the TV movie, the show was simply titled Travis McGee, and if successful, the idea was to create a series of films featuring the “salvage consultant.” Just as Tom Cruise’s casting as Reacher sparked debate in 2012, many felt Leonardo DiCaprio wasn’t quite right for the role. According to author John D. MacDonald, McGee is a very tanned former football player who is over six feet tall – a description that doesn’t really fit DiCaprio.
Despite the changes behind the scenes – including the departure of director Oliver Stone and interest from others like Paul Greengrass – DiCaprio remained committed to the project for a long time. He ultimately left the film, Travis McGee, in 2014, and hasn’t taken on a similar role since.
The Travis McGee Movie Has Been Trapped In Development Hell For Decades
The first Jack Reacher film came out in 2012, and a TV series on Prime Video followed ten years later. The show’s success led other streaming services to search for similar action heroes, like Netflix’s The Night Agent. Interestingly, considering author Lee Child has often cited Travis McGee as a key influence on the Reacher character, a movie adaptation of the McGee novels remains stuck in development.
This project has been in the works since the 1990s, but it’s never actually been made, even with actors like Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale previously involved. At one point, a version starring Christian Bale and directed by James Mangold seemed promising, but it was canceled when Bale was injured while filming The Big Short. The studio, Fox, then put the project on hold.
As a big movie fan, it wouldn’t surprise me if that adaptation just got sidelined when Disney bought Fox – it happened to so many projects. Considering how huge the Jack Reacher books and shows are now, bringing Travis McGee back to the screen – maybe as a movie, or even a TV series – feels like a really smart move. And if Chris Hemsworth is looking for a role that’s not quite as demanding physically as something like Extraction, but still lets him show off his comedic timing and charisma, Travis McGee would be absolutely perfect. He’s got the right mix of toughness and wit.
