In the 2022 series Moon Knight, he played Arthur Harrow, the primary antagonist who challenged the heroes Marc Spector and Steven Grant.

While an Arthur Harrow character briefly appeared in a 1985 Moon Knight comic, that’s where the connection to the MCU version ends. The comic book Harrow was a harsh scientist who conducted experiments on people, hoping to find relief from his own facial nerve pain.

Everything else became unimportant when Harrow started following Ammit’s orders, and it ultimately proved to be a good change. Hawke was particularly skilled at playing Harrow as a clever and cutting cult leader, using charm and manipulation to attract people to his side.

This loss of purpose was countered by the character’s deep resentment at being dismissed as Khonshu’s avatar. A combination of flawed beliefs and a personal grudge created a compelling villain – one of the most interesting the MCU has seen since the Infinity Saga ended.

Ethan Hawke played the role of Doctor Harrow, appearing as a mental presence within Marc and Steven’s minds. This version of the character was particularly unsettling because he psychologically manipulated the two leads, using his position as a psychiatrist to create doubt and conflict. Essentially, Hawke portrayed a villain who challenged Moon Knight and Mr. Knight both physically and mentally.

How Another Villain Role Led To Ethan Hawke Playing Arthur Harrow In Moon Knight

Ethan Hawke’s role in Moon Knight is particularly interesting because he initially joined the project with the intention of playing a different villain. Before Moon Knight, Hawke starred in the 2022 horror film The Black Phone as the character The Grabber. He worked with director Scott Derrickson on that film, having previously collaborated with him on the 2016 movie Doctor Strange.

Ethan Hawke told Uproxx that he discussed the possibility of being in Moon Knight with director Scott Derrickson while they were filming The Black Phone. Derrickson shared his insights from working on Doctor Strange and encouraged Hawke to take the role of Arthur Harrow. This led to Hawke playing villainous characters in both The Black Phone and Moon Knight, marking the first time he’d ever played an antagonist – and he did it twice in a row.

Ethan Hawke has had a remarkable acting career spanning over four decades.
