Prime Video has a compelling crime thriller with two seasons that skillfully blends the appeal of shows like Sherlock and Mindhunter, and actually gets even better in its second season. Prime Video consistently delivers strong content in this genre, becoming a go-to streaming service for crime dramas, even if not every show is a success. They’ve had enough hits to establish themselves as a leader in the genre.
Prime Video has a strong collection of crime thrillers, and three shows – Jack Ryan, Bosch, and Reacher – are currently the most popular. These series are all based on well-known books and are continuing as successful franchises, constantly evolving their stories. But while these three remain dominant, another show called Cross is quickly gaining recognition within the genre.
Prime Video’s Cross, based on James Patterson’s popular Alex Cross series, isn’t the first adaptation of his books. However, after two seasons, it’s proving to be the most successful one yet. Unlike many shows that decline in quality after a strong start, Cross actually got better in its second season.
Cross Season 2 Is A Strong Improvement Over Season 1
The first two seasons of Cross are solid adaptations of James Patterson’s novels. Although they aren’t based on any single book, the show incorporates plenty of familiar plot points and characters, feeling like a natural continuation of the Alex Cross series. Aldis Hodge delivers a fantastic performance, convincingly portraying both Cross’s brilliant detective skills and his personal struggles.
Season 2 of Cross is a big improvement over the first, immediately expanding the story’s scope to a national level. The first season felt like a tense back-and-forth between Alex and the quirky serial killer, Ed Ramsey. It was interesting how Season 1 drew inspiration from real American serial killers, giving it a similar feel to the show Mindhunter.
The first season’s villain felt a bit over-the-top and lacked seriousness. Thankfully, season 2 improves on this by creating much higher stakes and expanding the story to several different locations. While Matthew Lillard’s character, Lance Durand, is also unusual, Lillard’s performance makes him genuinely frightening and unpredictable.
Season 2 of Cross goes beyond a typical detective story by adding a morally ambiguous character, Rebecca (Jeanine Mason), who operates as a vigilante. This focus on complex psychological motivations brings to mind similar shows like Bosch, Sherlock, and Mindhunter.
Although Cross isn’t quite as good as Prime Video’s best crime thrillers yet, it’s showing promise and could become a really strong series over time.
Cross Is The Biggest Threat To Reacher’s Action Thriller Crown
Before it ended, the Bosch series was the main competitor to Reacher in the crime thriller genre on Prime Video. Now that Bosch is finished and its spin-off, Ballard, is just beginning, it’s not currently as popular as Reacher. Prime Video offers a lot of other exciting action thrillers, and plans to add even more new shows and series continuations in the future.
Currently, Reacher is the more popular show on Prime Video. While Cross has had two seasons, it hasn’t yet reached the same level of success or critical praise as Reacher. However, if Cross continues to get better with each new season, it has the potential to become a strong competitor.
While Cross really shines with its story-driven approach, particularly in its second season, Reacher has generally relied on its main character’s strength and direct action to resolve conflicts. But the upcoming fourth season of Reacher seems poised to shift gears, becoming more of a thinking-person’s thriller as it adapts the novel Gone Tomorrow.
Although Prime Video‘s Cross probably won’t become as popular as Reacher in the near future, it’s starting to find its own audience. Because the show has plenty of source material to draw from, it could have a long run like Reacher and Sherlock, and hopefully avoid the early cancellation that happened to Mindhunter.
