Sebastian Stan’s Fjord Makes Cannes History For Neon

Neon continues a seven-year run at Cannes Film Festival.

Fjord marks Christian Mungiu’s debut feature film in the English language. The story centers on Mihai (Sebastian Stan) and Lisbet (Renate Reinsve), a Romanian-Norwegian couple who relocate to Lisbet’s isolated childhood village with their children, hoping for a new beginning. However, their plans are disrupted when they meet another couple with conflicting beliefs and a different lifestyle. The film also stars Lisa Carlehed, Ellen Dorrit Petersen, Lisa Loven Kongsli, Henrikke Lund-Olsen, Vanessa Ceban, Markus Tønseth, and Jonathan Ciprian Breazu.

Mungiu’s film, Fjord, was a critical success and won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, giving the studio its seventh consecutive win. The Palme d’Or is the highest honor a filmmaker can receive at Cannes, awarded annually since 1955 to the director of the best feature film. This win marks the director’s second Palme d’Or, placing them among an exclusive group of only ten filmmakers to achieve this honor twice.

Neon will release the film Fjord in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand in May 2025. Goodfellas, a French company, is managing distribution internationally. As of today, a U.S. release date hasn’t been announced, but Fjord will premiere in French theaters on August 19, 2026, and in Norwegian theaters on September 4, 2026.

Neon has been a consistent award winner since 2019, starting with Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite, which won the Palme d’Or and four Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. The film also received nominations for Best Film Editing and Best Production Design. Since then, Neon has also been recognized for Titane, Triangle of Sadness, Anatomy of a Fall, Anora, and It Was Just an Accident.

Currently, a U.S. theatrical release date for Fjord hasn’t been confirmed, but it’s anticipated to arrive in theaters around late 2026.
