1 Day After The Late Show Finale, Stephen Colbert Has Already Found His Next Hosting Gig

The show has officially ended, but fortunately, Michigan public access has already started a new late-night program.

After more than 30 years, ended its run on May 21st. But Stephen Colbert quickly returned to late-night television, temporarily hosting Only in Monroe, a talk show produced by a public access station in Monroe, Michigan, the very next day.

Jack White, formerly of The White Stripes, was a musical guest on Colbert’s show and playfully shared a hot dog with the host in a nod to the classic Lady and the Tramp scene. Colbert also chatted with Michelle Baumann and Kaye Lani Rae Rafko Wilson, the creators of Only in Monroe, and they all sampled some Cain & Grain Scotch whiskey from River Raisin Distillery.

Why Stephen Colbert’s Return to Late Night Is So Exciting for Fans

The show featured a visit from Jeff Daniels, who chatted with Colbert and even helped him set a dumpster on fire – all thanks to a request from guest producer Eminem! Steve Buscemi also stopped by to talk about his pizza place. You can watch the full episode here.

The Late Show Finale Broke Viewership Records

Fans were relieved to see Stephen Colbert host Only in Monroe, especially considering the difficult end to The Late Show. Though the show was very profitable for CBS – despite the network’s attempts to downplay it – it concluded its 33-year run after facing months of criticism from both the FCC and the Trump administration. Colbert had hosted the show for 11 seasons, taking over from David Letterman in 2015.

After the last episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert aired, reports showed it was the most-watched weeknight episode ever. While the show averaged 2.7 million viewers in the first three months of 2026, the finale attracted over three times that amount, with 6.55 million people tuning in.
