The famous detective Hercule Poirot, created by Agatha Christie, is coming back to television with a brand new series in development.
According to Deadline, the BBC has secured the rights to create a new TV series featuring Hercule Poirot, beating out other streaming services and networks. The series could potentially run for three seasons and is being developed under the guidance of Benji Walters.
Mammoth Screen, the company behind successful adaptations of Agatha Christie’s works like Murder is Easy and And Then There Were None, is producing this new project. Agatha Christie Limited, which owns the rights to her books, is also involved.
Although specific details are still under wraps, the new detective show is expected to premiere in late 2027. Filming will start this summer in Liverpool and the surrounding areas of Northwest England. The BBC is currently casting actors for the roles of Hercule Poirot and other characters in the series.
Agatha Christie first introduced the detective Hercule Poirot in her 1920 novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles. She went on to write nearly three dozen more Poirot novels, including famous titles like The Murder on the Links, The Mystery of the Blue Train, Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile, Appointment with Death, Five Little Pigs, After the Funeral, Dead Man’s Folly, Elephants Can Remember, and Curtain: Poirot’s Last Case. In addition to the novels, she also wrote over 50 short stories featuring the iconic detective.
Following Agatha Christie’s death in 1976, author Sophie Hannah continued the stories of detective Hercule Poirot in novels such as The Monogram Murders, The Mystery of Three Quarters, and The Killings at Kingfisher Hill. Her latest Poirot mystery, The Last Death of the Year, came out in 2025.
Poirot is one of Agatha Christie’s most famous creations, alongside characters like Tommy & Tuppence and Miss Marple. His stories have been adapted for the screen and stage many times, appearing in plays, movies, and TV shows. Several actors have brought Poirot to life, including Austin Trevor, Tony Randall, Albert Finney, Peter Ustinov, and Kenneth Branagh.
Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, first published in 1934, is her most well-known Hercule Poirot mystery. It was first brought to the big screen in 1974 with Albert Finney in the lead role. The film has been critically acclaimed, earning an 89% ‘Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and received Academy Award nominations for acting (Finney), screenplay, cinematography, costume design, and musical score. Ingrid Bergman won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance.
After 43 years, Kenneth Branagh both directed and starred as Hercule Poirot in a new version of Murder on the Orient Express. The film earned $352 million worldwide and received generally favorable reviews, scoring 60% on Rotten Tomatoes. Branagh continued to play Poirot in subsequent films, Death on the Nile and A Haunting in Venice.
Agatha Christie’s stories haven’t just been made into movies. Her work has also been popular on television, most notably with the long-running ITV series Agatha Christie’s Poirot, starring David Suchet, which ran for 13 seasons over 24 years. The BBC, which is creating a new series, previously aired The ABC Murders in 2018, featuring John Malkovich as Poirot.
The BBC is bringing Hercule Poirot back to television. While it’s not yet clear which of Agatha Christie’s novels will be used for the new series, we’ll have more information soon.
