On May 21st, the platform announced updates for all subscribers. They recognized the significant improvements in international content and viewership, and introduced new tools to mark Global Accessibility Awareness Day.
Netflix Is Constantly Improving Its Accessibility Features
Over the past decade, TV shows and movies originally made in languages other than English have become much more popular. Just ten years ago, these foreign titles made up less than 10% of what people watched. Now, in 2026, they account for over a third. In fact, the streaming service reports that 70% of viewing on its platform comes from people watching content from outside of their own country.
Popular shows like Squid Game and Wednesday are attracting viewers across the globe. Both foreign-language shows with English dubbing and English-language titles are performing exceptionally well, and audio descriptions are also helping to broaden their reach.
Netflix currently provides subtitles, captions for those who are deaf or hard of hearing, audio descriptions, and dubbing in more than 30 languages.
In 2026, Netflix made searching easier with a new feature called “Search by Language.” Now, subscribers can find movies and shows directly from the search bar by specifying the language or accessibility options they’re looking for.
The streaming service significantly expanded its Audio Description offerings in 2025, adding over 13,000 hours of content in 34 languages – a more than 30% increase from the previous year.
Netflix doesn’t currently offer American Sign Language, but they plan to add it as a viewing option soon.
In honor of Global Accessibility Awareness Month, Netflix has created a special collection called Amplifying Accessibility Awareness. This collection highlights stories and perspectives from people with disabilities. It’s available until May 31st and features shows like Atypical, Love on the Spectrum, Pulse, All the Light We Cannot See, and other great titles.
Netflix Has Been Constantly Changing
Movie studios have always faced competition in theaters, but now the main battleground is streaming services. These services keep increasing their prices, so they need to offer appealing features to keep viewers happy – things like options for accessibility, a wide range of shows and movies, and user-friendly apps and websites.
If the merger goes through, Netflix will need to explore strategies to maintain its position as a leading platform.
