DCU’s Green Lantern Series Gets Shocking Official Season 2 Update Before Season 1 Has Even Premiered

The DC Universe is bringing a big spotlight on the Green Lantern Corps that may go beyond 2026.

The upcoming DC Studios TV show, Lanterns, is set to premiere in just a few months. Excitingly, reports of changes for the second season are already coming true with the confirmed addition of Christopher Cantwell to the writing team. You can find his official statement below.

According to InSneider, Christopher Cantwell is joining the TV show Lanterns for its second season as a writer and executive producer. He’s known for co-creating the series Halt and Catch Fire and also served as an executive producer on the Paper Girls adaptation.

As of today, HBO, Warner Bros. Television, and DC Studios haven’t announced whether Lanterns will have a second season. They haven’t yet decided if the show will continue beyond the initial season.

Despite the first season not being fully released yet, it’s possible work on a second season of Lanterns has already started. Studios and networks often begin planning for future seasons before officially renewing a show.

Working on scripts for season two of Lanterns now will help the show get into production quickly if HBO renews it. This would allow filming to start sooner and potentially bring the series back in 2027.

According to the initial report, Damon Lindelof and Tom King, the executive producers of Lanterns, are likely to be less involved in season two because of other work commitments. However, DC Studios, HBO, and Warner Bros. TV haven’t officially confirmed this.

The addition of Cantwell is encouraging because of his experience with comics – he’s previously worked on titles for both DC and Marvel. Like creator Tom King, Cantwell is a TV writer with a background in comics, continuing a positive trend established in the first season of Lanterns.

Showrunner Chris Mundy has hinted that a second season of Lanterns is likely. The creators of Ozark originally planned the show to have several seasons, making the recent hiring of a new writer a good fit for the future.

The first chapter of the new DC Universe, “Gods and Monsters,” is already highlighting its focus on the Green Lanterns. Aaron Pierre, who is set to play John Stewart in the upcoming HBO series, will also return as the character in the 2027 film, Man of Tomorrow.

I’m really hoping we get a second season of Lanterns! If it happens, I think we’ll see John Stewart really step into his role as the main Green Lantern for the DC Universe, which is awesome. And honestly, I’m excited about the possibility of seeing more Green Lanterns from the comics show up – it could add so much depth and complexity to the story!

HBO will probably decide whether to renew Lanterns for a second season before the end of 2026, based on how well the first season is received. It’s currently unclear if that decision will come before, during, or after the first season airs.

The new series, Lanterns, will debut on HBO and begin streaming on HBO Max on Sunday, August 16th.
