Avengers: Doomsday reinvents a core Marvel Cinematic Universe dynamic.
I’m so excited for Avengers: Doomsday! It sounds like they’re pulling characters from everywhere in the MCU – heroes and villains from both the Infinity Saga and the Multiverse Saga, plus even characters from the old Fox Marvel movies like the X-Men. But the biggest news for me? Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. are both coming back! It’s going to be amazing to see them share the screen again, even though Robert is playing Doctor Doom this time and Chris is reprising his role as Captain America. I can’t wait to see how their characters interact in this new story.
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Captain America: Civil War, the Russo Brothers (directors of Avengers: Endgame) discussed the complex relationship between Captain America and Iron Man. They explained how that same tension continues to influence the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially as the next Avengers film is in development.
Anthony Russo pointed out that fans still disagree about who they connected with more in Civil War. He explained that the complex motivations and weaknesses of those characters will continue to be explored in Avengers: Doomsday. Joe Russo then commended Marvel Studios for its ability to maintain compelling, long-form stories on a massive scale, calling them the best in the business at it. He also described Avengers: Doomsday as a fresh take on that established dynamic, with Robert Downey Jr. taking on the role of Doom and reimagining the entire franchise.
Considering Chris Evans’ Captain America was featured prominently in the initial teaser for the first Avengers: Doomsday, and given the character’s significant presence in the most popular Marvel Cinematic Universe films, it’s likely Captain America will be a central figure in the 2026 movie. The Russo Brothers hinted at this when they released the teaser and stated that the story would ultimately return to Steve Rogers – the character most associated with their work in the MCU – now that they’re directing the next two Avengers films.
Although Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom hasn’t appeared in any trailers for Avengers: Doomsday yet, he’s expected to be a central figure in the film. The title itself suggests a significant role, and many believe Doctor Doom will be crucial in dramatically changing the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s multiverse. He was first introduced in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, with a quick scene showing him with Reed and Sue Richards’ son, Franklin, at the Baxter Building, just before Vanessa Kirby’s character arrived to confront the villain.
Captain America and Iron Man frequently disagreed, clashing over their approaches, personalities, and beliefs. In the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie, Captain America’s choice to remain in the past with Peggy Carter could have serious repercussions for the entire multiverse, potentially leading to a conflict with Doctor Doom. Or, the film could explore a new dynamic between Captain America and Doom, with Steve trying to protect the multiverse and Doom seeking to dominate it. The official trailer for Avengers: Doomsday will likely reveal which direction the story takes.
