Beware, major spoilers follow for the finale of The Boys! Does the ending hint at the arrival of a new superhero?
Eric Kripke, the creator of The Boys, has explained the meaning behind the series finale’s last scene, and whether a particular character is developing superpowers. The finale jumps ahead several months after Homelander is defeated and Butcher dies. The final scene shows Hughie and Starlight running an electronics store together, while Starlight continues to fight crime as a superhero. Importantly, she’s pregnant, and the baby is named Robin – a tribute to Hughie’s former girlfriend, who was tragically killed by A-Train at the beginning of the show.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant, The Boys creator Eric Kripke discussed the final scene between Hughie and Starlight, and what the future might hold for their baby, Robin. Kripke explained that, unlike Ryan, Robin is expected to be born without any superpowers. He believes Hughie and Starlight want to give their daughter a normal, happy life, free from the dangers of Compound V and the complicated world of superheroes, even though Starlight is a hero herself.
Check out what Kripke had to say below:
Man, the very last scene of the main series really got to me. It’s Hughie, just smiling up at the sky while looking at Starlight, who’s pregnant. It makes you wonder, doesn’t it? What kind of life is that kid going to have?
Eric Kripke jokes that Ryan is the only character naturally born with superpowers; everyone else gets them through injections. He hopes the characters will learn from their experiences and let baby Robin grow up with a normal, happy life.
Liam Crowley: If Gen V ever gets a future season down the line-
While I’m not promising anything, I believe there are more stories we could tell within this world, and we’d love to revisit those characters and continue their journeys.
The ending of The Boys suggests the characters are seeking calmer lives after their battle with Homelander and Vought. Hughie, for example, turns down a job offer from President Bob Singer to lead a new team monitoring Supes. Instead of continuing to fight them, he chooses a more peaceful life with Starlight, focusing on making a difference in the world without violence or chaos.
Okay, so here’s what I’m getting from all this: Robin’s parents are deliberately raising her to be normal. No powers, no involvement in the whole Supe mess. Given everything they’ve been through – and what Kripke’s said about their intentions – it makes total sense they’d want to keep her far away from Vought and that life. Honestly, it feels like a pretty clear signal that she’s not going to be a major player in the larger Boys universe, and frankly, that’s probably for the best. They just want to protect her from all the craziness her parents had to endure.
Just because she might not be in the new shows right away doesn’t rule out her appearing later. The world of The Boys is growing, with two spinoffs already being developed. One of these, The Boys: Mexico, is set after the original series, and because of when it takes place, there’s still a chance Hughie and Starlight could make guest appearances down the line, even if it’s just briefly.
Hughie and Starlight are committed to raising their daughter, Robin, without her developing superpowers, and The Boys gives them an ending that allows for a peaceful, normal life. While the story could potentially continue within the larger franchise, this feels like a firm and lasting conclusion for their characters.
