Off Campus’ Subtle Dean Detail Effectively Confirms Dreaded Death

Be warned – the following contains spoilers for the Off Campus show and book! While the first season of Off Campus ended on a positive note, a major tragedy is hinted at for Briar University, and a small detail about Dean Di Laurentis strongly suggests it’s coming. Following the popularity of Heated Rivalry on Crave and HBO Max, Prime Video released another hockey-themed romance, but with a larger cast of characters. Season 1 of Off Campus primarily followed the story of Hannah Wells and the relationship between Garrett and Graham, which was based on Ell Kennedy’s novel The Deal. However, the season also introduced storylines and set up future events for other characters, including Dean and Allie Hayes.

Fans of the books were surprised to see Dean and Allie’s relationship develop so early in the first season of Off Campus, as their story didn’t begin until the third book, The Score. However, Stephen Kalyn and Mika Abdralla had fantastic chemistry, making their connection immediately engaging. Moving their storyline up does mean Beau Maxwell’s tragic death will happen sooner than expected. While viewers hoped the Off Campus series on Prime Video might change the fate of Khobe Clarke’s character, it seems that storyline will likely follow the books.

Dean & Beau’s Halloween Costumes Foreshadow Off Campus’ Death

Okay, so I’ve been thinking about what happened with Beau in Off Campus, and honestly, it doesn’t look good. It all comes down to a little detail in season one. Dean and Beau instantly clicked, and they really cemented their bond when they planned that Top Gunthemed party. They went as Maverick and Goose, which was a fun touch, but knowing how Top Gun* ends… well, it’s a pretty big hint. Anyone who’s seen the movie knows Goose tragically dies during training. Seeing Dean as Maverick and Beau as Goose feels less like a fun costume choice and more like foreshadowing Beau’s fate. It’s a clever, but heartbreaking, detail if you know the original movie.

In the book, Clarke died in a car accident while visiting his grandmother in Wisconsin for her birthday. The birthday party depicted in the Off Campus series on Prime Video differs from this original story. Notably, Dean and Allie had met before in the show, which was a positive change given how charming their first encounter was. As a result, the Top Gun costumes worn by Beau and Dean didn’t appear in the book. Considering this, it seems likely that the costumes were deliberately chosen to foreshadow Beau’s later death.

Why There’s No Escaping Beau’s Death In Prime Video’s Off Campus

While it’s debatable whether Maverick was to blame for Goose’s death in Top Gun, he clearly felt responsible for years, as shown in Top Gun: Maverick. Similarly, the first season of Off Campus effectively built a strong friendship between Beau and Dean, despite limited screen time, so viewers naturally hoped to see that continue. However, Beau’s death served a crucial purpose in The Score; it forced Dean to grow up and deal with his grief, even if he initially coped in unhealthy ways.

Leaving out Beau’s death in the Prime Video series weakens the emotional connection viewers have with Dean and Allie’s relationship. Even though the show is generally uplifting, it needs significant challenges to truly move the audience. Losing Beau and Clarke will be painful when it eventually happens, and the show can’t simply avoid addressing it.
