Quentin Tarantino & Robert De Niro’s Crime Thriller Adaptation Officially Releases On Major Streamer This Week

Quentin Tarantino’s slick crime classic is cashing in on a major streamer this week.

Quentin Tarantino is known for his unique crime films, filled with over-the-top violence, colorful language, and pop culture references. He first gained attention with Reservoir Dogs in 1992, but it was Pulp Fiction in 1994 that truly made him a Hollywood icon, earning awards at both the Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Awards. Now, fans can enjoy another one of his stylish and memorable crime movies on streaming platforms.

This week, Quentin Tarantino’s 1997 crime film Jackie Brown—based on the Elmore Leonard novel Rum Punch—is becoming available on a major streaming service. The film, released almost three decades ago, stars Jackie Brown, a flight attendant who gets caught up in a dangerous scheme to smuggle money across the U.S.-Mexico border.

After premiering in theaters in 1997, the film Jackie Brown will be available to stream on Peacock starting May 22nd. Currently, it isn’t available on any other streaming services in the U.S., but you can rent or buy it on platforms like Prime Video for as little as $3.99.

The film Jackie Brown features a talented cast including Pam Grier and Robert Forster, both returning to leading roles after a long hiatus, as well as stars like Samuel L. Jackson, Bridget Fonda, Michael Keaton, and Robert De Niro. Rounding out the ensemble are Michael Bowen, Chris Tucker, LisaGay Hamilton, Tommy ‘Tiny’ Lister Jr., Hattie Winston, Sid Haig, Gillian Iliana Waters, Michelle Berube, Denise Crosby, Ellis E. Williams, and T’Keyah Crystal Keymáh.

When Jackie Brown came out in 1997, it was highly praised by critics, earning an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Many reviewers highlighted the film as a great vehicle for Pam Grier, and appreciated Quentin Tarantino’s signature style of clever dialogue and quirky energy. Some did note that the movie has a slower pace.

Viewers loved Jackie Brown, giving it an 85% audience score, and the film did very well in theaters, earning $74.7 million despite only costing $12 million to make. Robert Forster’s performance earned him an Academy Award nomination, and both Pam Grier and Samuel L. Jackson were nominated for Golden Globes.

As a film buff, I’ve always seen Jackie Brown as Quentin Tarantino’s clear love letter to the blaxploitation films of the 70s – especially Coffy and Foxy Brown, both of which starred the amazing Pam Grier. It’s also unique in his filmography because it’s the only movie he’s ever made that’s based on someone else’s work. Honestly, even though it doesn’t always get the attention it deserves, for anyone who loves Tarantino, Jackie Brown is essential viewing.
