HBO’s Green Lantern Series May Have Just Revealed The DCU’s First Justice League-Level Villain

The upcoming HBO Max series Lanterns might have hinted at the first major villain in James Gunn’s new DC Universe, one powerful enough to bring the Justice League together. The DCU is in its early stages, and many of the planned movies and shows are currently focused on introducing its heroes. Upcoming projects include a Wonder Woman series, the Supergirl movie, and Lanterns, which will feature the first appearances of Hal Jordan and John Stewart.

A Justice League movie isn’t happening anytime soon, but the new show Lanterns might be setting up its main villain. Lanterns is being promoted as a realistic murder mystery on Earth, centered around Hal Jordan training John Stewart to become the next Green Lantern. However, even with its serious tone, the show could introduce a villain powerful enough to threaten the entire DC Universe and eventually bring the Justice League together.

Lanterns’ New Trailer Had Several Clues Related To Sinestro & Parallax

The latest trailer for the show Lanterns gave us a good look at the Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan (played by Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), and hinted at some of their most iconic enemies: Sinestro and Parallax. In the comics, Parallax is fear itself, and Sinestro created the Yellow Lanterns, who draw their power from it. Both characters pose a major danger to all Green Lanterns, especially Hal Jordan.

The latest trailer for Lanterns contains many hints that Sinestro and Parallax will be major villains in the DC Universe. One scene shows Hal Jordan speaking to a figure seemingly imprisoned, strongly suggesting it’s Sinestro. Last year, Ulrich Thomson was cast as Sinestro for Lanterns and will be appearing in multiple installments. It’s highly probable that Sinestro has already become an enemy of the Green Lanterns within the show, potentially leading to the introduction of the Sinestro Corps and the Yellow Lanterns, along with the villain Parallax.

The trailer hints at a well-known storyline where Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, falls under the influence of Parallax and fear. For example, his suit looks particularly yellow in one shot, a color strongly linked to fear. Throughout the trailer, the theme of fear is emphasized, and characters repeatedly ask, “Are you afraid?”

Hal Jordan’s corruption by Parallax could clarify some puzzling aspects of the Green Lantern stories. His fear and the influence of Parallax might explain why he’s distrustful of John Stewart and reluctant to let him use a Green Lantern ring. It would also make sense of Hal’s cynical behavior, like using the ring for illegal activities and appearing apathetic. This corruption could even be the reason John Stewart eventually becomes the main Green Lantern, particularly if Hal doesn’t survive the ordeal.

I’m so excited about Lanterns! The creators have hinted at something huge – they’re suggesting that Hal Jordan might actually be controlled by Parallax! Apparently, Hal is training John Stewart to be a Green Lantern because the Guardians of Oa specifically chose John as his replacement, and they had a really good reason for doing so. It seems like the only explanation, besides Hal dying or stepping down on his own, is that he’s been taken over by fear – by Parallax himself! It’s a really intriguing idea and I can’t wait to see how it plays out.

There’s growing evidence that the upcoming series Lanterns might be laying the groundwork for the introduction of Parallax into the DC Universe. James Gunn has described Lanterns as being similar to True Detective, the popular HBO crime show. While many thought this comparison was just about the show’s focus on a realistic murder mystery, it could go deeper. Lanterns might also be borrowing the horror aspects that made True Detective so effective.

The first season of True Detective heavily features the occult and a pervasive sense of dark, ancient horror. To make the upcoming Lanterns movie feel similar, using the character Parallax would be a natural fit, especially given the trailer’s emphasis on fear. While James Gunn could have taken inspiration from many crime dramas, he specifically chose True Detective, suggesting a deliberate connection to its mysterious and unsettling atmosphere.

Parallax & The Sinestro Corps Would Be A Big Enough Threat To Require The Entire Justice League

As a huge DC fan, I’m really getting the sense that Lanterns is building towards the arrival of Parallax, and honestly, it’s brilliant. Parallax could be the villain to finally bring the Justice League together as a proper team. Think about it – he’s not just a bad guy, he is fear itself, a truly cosmic and terrifying force. While he’s traditionally been a Green Lantern’s problem, Parallax is so powerful that even Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and Guy Gardner might need some backup to handle him.

James Gunn could easily establish Parallax and the Sinestro Corps as a massive, universe-threatening force. Parallax is already incredibly powerful, and with Sinestro leading an army of Yellow Lanterns, it would be far too much for the Green Lanterns to manage on their own. The danger would be even greater if Hal Jordan fell prey to fear and became Parallax’s host.

The direction of the DC Universe suggests Parallax could be the threat that brings the Justice League together. The upcoming Man of Tomorrow film will feature Brainiac as the villain, and he’s powerful enough to force Superman and Lex Luthor to team up. Considering Brainiac is a significant threat, and Lex Luthor is willing to collaborate with Superman despite their rivalry, Parallax – who is even more dangerous – could be the catalyst needed to unite the key members of the Justice League.

Evidence is mounting that Parallax will be the main villain of the new DC Universe. The first chapter of the DCU, called “Gods and Monsters” (inspired by the opening of the upcoming Superman movie in 2025), hints at a powerful, god-like threat. So far, Parallax is the only villain DC has suggested who fits that description – it’s a massive cosmic being and essentially the living form of fear. While Superman himself could be the “god” in the title, it’s increasingly likely that the heroes will be facing off against Parallax.

Parallax would be an ideal villain for the upcoming Justice League movie in the DC Universe. This would be a departure from the previous Justice League film, which focused on Darkseid. Considering James Gunn’s commitment to staying true to the comics, especially those from DC’s Silver Age, and given that Sinestro and Parallax are well-established comic book villains, it seems likely that the Lanterns series will set up the Justice League’s initial foe.
