Isobel’s FBI Season 8 Hero Sacrifice Is To Blame For OA’s Departure

Okay, fellow FBI fans, brace yourselves – spoilers ahead for the season 8 finale, “Defector”! I have to say, I was really bummed to see OA get fired, and honestly, it felt like Isobel could have prevented it if she’d made a different call earlier in the season. It’s tough knowing CBS is wrapping up a lot of shows this year, and FBI is one of the last of Dick Wolf’s series that hasn’t moved over to NBC. Season 8 was a rollercoaster – so many ups and downs for the team – so it felt fitting that the year would end with a particularly tricky case and a really unique villain. It definitely left me with a lot to think about!

In the eighth season finale of FBI, Anna Vorpe reappeared as the head of the NSA. Her meeting with the team, specifically Isobel and the others, wasn’t planned; they just happened to be responding to a hijacking that turned out to be a secret operation. For the entire hour, OA, Maggie, Scola, and Eva had to cooperate with Vorpe and her people, only to be betrayed when Vorpe, with the backing of new ADIC Lawrence Green, tried to conceal a deadly bio-attack that occurred in Manhattan. OA understandably protested, leading to his dismissal by Isobel’s superior.

Isobel Previously Turned Down The ADIC Position In FBI Season 8

The big surprise at the end of the “Defector” episode was that Isobel and Maggie intentionally orchestrated their removal from the team and recruitment by Vorpe – it was all part of a plan to dismantle the corrupt law enforcement group. According to showrunner Mike Weiss (as reported by TVLine), the next season of FBI will continue with this storyline, which will involve Zeeko Zaki going undercover with the team for months. While this creates exciting possibilities for future episodes, the situation with Vorpe escalated unnecessarily. If Isobel had accepted the ADIC position earlier, OA wouldn’t have had to risk his life to stop her.

Isobel was offered the position of Deputy Assistant Director (ADIC) because of her work in the season 7 finale and the current state of the FBI. However, she turned down the promotion when she found out Jubal wouldn’t be taking her place. This kept the main team working together, with Isobel still involved in their daily cases. But it also paved the way for Agent Green to join, and it’s clear from the season 8 finale that Green doesn’t share the same values as the rest of the team when it comes to how to approach the job.

How Isobel Being ADIC Could Have Prevented FBI Season 8 Finale’s Catastrophe

In an important scene from “Defector,” Maggie and OA went to Isobel to complain about Vorpe. Isobel acknowledged their concerns but explained she’d already tried to warn her superiors about Vorpe’s behavior. She felt the only way to stop her now would be definitive proof – something undeniable. The situation became even more frustrating when Green unexpectedly sided with Vorpe and took charge of the investigation.

If Isobel had been the Assistant Director in Season 8, she’d have had more authority and the team wouldn’t be dealing with issues caused by her current boss. She would have been able to get crucial information – like updates on the bus – directly, helping them catch Vorpe more easily. At the very least, she could have fully supported her team instead of being forced to follow Green’s orders.

Some believe Green might be helping OA secretly infiltrate Vorpe’s organization, but the way the season 8 finale of FBI ended strongly implied that only Green, Maggie, and Isobel knew about the plan. Jubal, Scola, and Eva were intentionally left in the dark – not because they weren’t trusted, but to increase the operation’s chances of success by limiting who knew about it.
