Players hoping to play Subnautica 2 on PlayStation may have to wait a while. The game launched in early access last week for Xbox and PC, building on the original’s underwater survival gameplay with new creatures, vehicles, and the ability to play with friends in co-op mode.
Even in its early stages, Subnautica 2 is receiving positive feedback, with many players considering it a strong follow-up to the original game, despite the changes being mostly small improvements. A common complaint is that it’s not yet available on all consoles, and some fans are hoping for a PS5 version, though it might take a while before that happens.
Soon after Subnautica 2 came out, a Reddit user named Spaceboyjt13 asked on the Subnautica subreddit when the game would be available on PlayStation. They explained that their Xbox One wasn’t powerful enough to run Subnautica 2.
Fans weren’t thrilled to learn the PlayStation version of Subnautica 2 won’t be available until the game fully launches, which developers Unknown Worlds Entertainment estimate will be in two to three years. This information comes from a statement on the game’s Steam page, where they say the game will be in early access for that amount of time, according to CollinL54.
As one commenter pointed out, Sony generally avoids releasing games that are still in early access. While this isn’t entirely accurate – PlayStation does occasionally get early access titles, like Path of Exile 2 – it’s true that they lack a dedicated program for them, unlike Xbox and Steam. Many developers seem to prefer waiting until their games are fully finished before releasing on the PS5, possibly because PlayStation doesn’t offer the same level of support tools for early access releases.
People were upset to hear about the long wait, with one user, Spaceboytj13, expressing their disappointment with a GIF of a crying man. Others voiced their frustration, pointing out the delay for Subnautica 2 and comparing it to the increasing number of low-quality, AI-generated games appearing on the PlayStation store.
One user, lilfacetou, expressed frustration that low-quality, AI-generated games are available while a highly anticipated game is facing issues. They posted, “It’s unbelievable that we’re seeing poorly rated AI games but not the game everyone’s been waiting for! I like PlayStation, but Sony needs to improve its handling of this situation.”
At least one player expressed optimism. NightStar79 pointed out that PlayStation players will receive the complete story all at once, rather than repeatedly playing an incomplete version and relying on small updates and guesswork. They compared it to receiving a full meal instead of just a few crumbs.
Okay, so it looks like PlayStation players might have to be patient for Subnautica 2, but the good news is we’ll get the full game when it does finally arrive. Still, a lot of us who loved the first Subnautica are bummed that we’ll have to wait even longer to jump into the sequel.
