Even though Hugh Jackman’s detective film received positive reviews, a follow-up movie probably won’t happen.
Hugh Jackman is known as a talented and adaptable actor who consistently chooses challenging and unconventional roles. He’s become one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, consistently attracting both large audiences and positive reviews, and has even received a Golden Globe award for his performances.
Hugh Jackman recently starred in the comedy-mystery film, The Sheep Detectives, which is based on Leonie Swann’s 2005 novel, Three Bags Full. The movie tells the story of a group of sheep who work together to investigate the death of their shepherd. Kyle Balda directed the film, and the screenplay was co-written by Craig Mazin, known for his work on The Last of Us.
Released in the U.S. on May 8th, the movie has earned $59 million despite costing $75 million to make. While the box office numbers are somewhat modest, critics and audiences loved it, giving it a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and a 96% rating from viewers. The Sheep Detectives is a delightful and heartwarming comedy-drama, powerfully led by a strong performance from Jackman.
According to Slash Film, a sequel to the critically acclaimed movie The Sheep Detectives 2 isn’t planned, according to its writer, Mazin. Despite the film’s positive reception on Rotten Tomatoes, Mazin doesn’t anticipate making a sequel and prefers it remain a standalone story. Here’s what Mazin had to say:
I know that there is a sequel to the book, so would you be interested in more “Sheep Detectives?”
You know, I’ve done a lot of sequels, and honestly, I’m not sure if I have any more in me. [laughs] It’s a weird feeling watching this one, though. Usually, I’d write a script, we’d film it, and I’d see it with an audience all as one big thing. But this script is about ten years old – I tweaked it here and there, but nothing major – so watching it now feels…distant. And it’s actually really nice! There’s a separation between the pain of writing and the joy of watching, which is a great feeling. I really think it’s something special, a little gem. So, would I do it all again? Maybe. If people connect with this movie like I hope they will, I’d probably just want to take a final bow and call it a career.
His remarks highlight the differences between writing a script and the final film, and how those two processes can be very different. Though there’s another book in the series, Mazin seems to have finished working with this story, but he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of continuing it in the future.
This film is the first to be based on a script by Mazin since 2016’s The Huntsman: Winter’s War, and his creative approach may have evolved since he wrote The Sheep Detectives. While Mazin previously found success writing comedies like The Hangover Part II and Scary Movie 4, the series Chernobyl signaled a shift towards more serious and dramatic work.
While the movie The Sheep Detectives didn’t perform exceptionally well in theaters, it’s probably the creator’s desire to work on new projects that’s preventing a sequel. For now, it’s best to appreciate the film as a single, finished story, rather than hoping for a continuation.
