David Tennant’s Rivals Season 2 Officially Cracks Hulu & Disney’s Top 10 Streaming Charts

David Tennant continues to be television royalty with his Disney series.

David Tennant became a fan favorite after playing the Tenth Doctor on the BBC’s Doctor Who, and he’s continued to appear in popular shows like Broadchurch and the Netflix series Jessica Jones. Though he often plays heroic characters, Tennant is also skilled at portraying villains. He’s now back as the villainous Lord Tony Baddingham in the second season of Rivals.

The second season of Rivals debuted at number 7 on Hulu’s streaming charts in the United States, following The Testaments at number 2 and Perfect Crown at number 6. According to FlixPatrol, the series also reached number 7 on Disney+ globally.

The series is currently number one in both Ireland and the United States, and a top 10 hit in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany, and Spain. Because Hulu isn’t available everywhere, the show is being streamed internationally on Disney+.

Okay, let me tell you about this series. It’s based on Jilly Cooper’s novels and it’s… well, let’s just say it’s full of drama and a little bit scandalous! The core of the story is this intense rivalry between Tony Baddinham, who runs a TV station, and Rupert Black – Alex Hassell is fantastic in the role. Things really heat up when new characters enter the scene, like the intriguing journalist Declan O’Hara, played by Aidan Turner, and the ambitious Cameron Cook, portrayed by Nafessa Williams. Expect plenty of power plays and complicated relationships – it’s a real rollercoaster!

The second season picks up where the first left off, with Tony determined to get revenge after the issues with the licensing rights. Alongside familiar actors like Hassell and Turner, the new season introduces several fresh faces, including Hayley Atwell, Rupert Everett, Maxim Ays, Bobby Lockwood, Eliot Salt, Amanda Lawrence, and Olive Tennant.

The first season of Rivals, which launched in 2024, quickly became popular, reaching the top 10 on Reelgood and winning an International Emmy Award for Best Drama Series. David Tennant was also nominated for a leading actor award at the British Academy Television Awards. Due to its success, Disney has renewed the show for a second season, increasing the episode count to twelve. These new episodes will be released in two parts: the first six will air between May 15th and June 5th.

The show Rivals has received excellent reviews. The first season earned a 95% approval rating from critics and a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Season 2 has been even more successful, achieving a perfect 100% score. Critics agree that the new season is more intense and dramatic, and the longer episode count allows for greater character development, particularly for characters like Rupert.

David Tennant isn’t just back as the Doctor! The final season of Good Omens, where he plays the demon Crowley, recently launched on Prime Video and is currently at No. 5 on their streaming charts, even though reviews for the season have been somewhat mixed. In addition to the ongoing second season of Rivals on Hulu and Disney+, Tennant also has a couple of other TV shows coming up, including seasons 3 of Time and a new series called Hide.

New episodes of Rivals season 2 (episodes 4 through 6) will be released each week on both Hulu and Disney+. The release dates for the rest of the season haven’t been revealed yet.
