Be warned, this contains spoilers for From season 4, episode 5, “What a Long Strange Trip It’s Been.” The latest season of From introduces frightening new creatures, and their appearance uncovers a disturbing truth about the town. In the previous episode, a resident named Roger discovered a rope attached to something rising from the lake. Episode 5 reveals that this rope is connected to three incredibly realistic, life-sized dolls.
Donna Raines believes the dolls were placed in the lake to hold back something dangerous, so she and the other residents of the settlement weigh them down with rocks to keep them submerged. But that night, a strange, haunting song triggers a forgotten memory in Tabitha Matthews, revealing the truth.
The dolls magically came to life and stormed into the cabin, ignoring the protective talisman just like the creatures from the woods. One of them brutally attacked and killed Roger by tearing his jaw apart. Only when Tabitha destroyed another doll using a totem did the remaining two retreat.
The new monsters appearing are terrifying, made even worse by the fact that the talismans don’t work against them. But what Tabitha recalls about where they came from – and how it relates to the townspeople’s nightmares – is truly frightening.
The Nightmares Of The Deceased Come To Life In From’s Township
Tabitha has a fragmented memory from a past life: when she was a child living in the Township, she played with dolls that terrified a local man. He was so frightened by them that he threw them into the lake. After his death, the dolls mysteriously came to life. This connects to a recent memory Tabitha had of herself as a child, looking up and screaming at something huge. Now, in the present, those same dolls – now monstrous – are attacking Tabitha, along with Donna, Ethan Matthews (who is also Simon Webster), Roger, and Patty (Trina Corkum).
According to Tabitha, the monsters originated from the nightmares of a man who died – his fears became real after his death. This idea is similar to something Sara Myers mentioned in season 2 of From: her brother, Nathan, had childhood nightmares about cicadas, and after he died, other people in town began seeing swarms of them.
In season 4, episode 4, Marielle Sinclair (Kaelen Ohm) reveals to Kristi Miller (Chloe Van Landschoot) that the town is haunted by the lingering pain of those who died there. Marielle explains she can hear their screams, and that they remain trapped, their suffering fueling an ancient evil.
The town isn’t just filled with the dead, but with the terrifying nightmares they bring with them, haunting those still alive. While From has revealed many dark secrets, this is the most unsettling yet: death isn’t an escape, but another form of imprisonment that unleashes new terrors on the living.
From’s Dark Reveal Hints At The Show’s Endgame
Tabitha, Jade Herrera, Boyd Stevens, and others have been desperately trying to find a way out of the Township, but recent discoveries about the new monsters suggest escape might not be what they think. Since the dead are stuck there and their fears become real, it’s possible no one can truly leave the Town. Even if the living manage to escape, the spirits would be trapped there forever.
For some time, Tabitha has been tasked with saving the town’s deceased children, but the details of how to do that have remained unclear. It now appears that rescuing these children is a necessary step before anyone can leave town, and it’s possible that all the town’s dead need to be helped before things can return to normal.
Now that season 5 has been announced as the show’s finale, From is entering its final stretch. The remaining characters will continue their fight to free those trapped and confront the terrifying forces haunting them.
