Although J.R.R. Tolkien’s world of Middle-earth doesn’t immediately seem suited for video games, several successful titles prove otherwise. While these games don’t always capture the books’ quieter, more poetic atmosphere, they’ve offered compelling stories, and it looks like there are plenty more adventures yet to come.
Amazon Has Canceled Its Lord Of The Rings MMO
So, back in 2023, Amazon Games announced they were making an MMO set in Middle-earth, which was kinda surprising since The Lord of the Rings Online already exists and is still getting updated! Honestly, we never really got any details about how Amazon’s game would be different – they never showed any gameplay or even gave it a title. It just kind of… fizzled out without us ever knowing what it would have been like.
The game has been canceled, but the company still plans to create games based on the world of Middle-earth. Unfortunately, this means a major upcoming Lord of the Rings game is no longer in development, and there are currently no plans for a replacement.
Fans of The Lord of the Rings have something to look forward to: a new movie, The Hunt for Gollum, is coming next year, and the main Lord of the Rings franchise will return in 2027. With the original movies having popular video game adaptations, it makes sense for New Line Cinema to release a new game alongside the films. However, a recent report from Eurogamer suggests that a previously planned Lord of the Rings MMO wasn’t finished, and the lack of any game currently in development isn’t a good sign for the future of Lord of the Rings video games.
The Kingdom Come: Deliverance Developers Might Save The Day
Although Amazon cancelled its Lord of the Rings MMO, there’s still a possibility of a new fantasy game. Warhorse Studios, known for Kingdom Come: Deliverance, is reportedly working on a large-scale project, potentially as expansive as Hogwarts Legacy. However, details about the game’s story or world remain unknown.
It’s disappointing that Amazon cancelled their Lord of the Rings MMO, but without knowing much about the game, it’s hard to say if it would have been successful. However, Warhorse Studios has a great history of making quality games, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is already looking like one of the best releases of 2025. If anyone can create a fantastic Middle-earth game, it’s them, and even though it might take time, the final result will likely be excellent.
