From Season 4: Jade’s Evolving Love for Tabitha & Mushroom Trip Explained

Be warned: This contains spoilers! The connection between Jade and Tabitha in Season 4, Episode 5 is a truly memorable and deeply felt romance that will resonate with viewers for a long time.

The season 3 finale showed that Jade and Tabitha were once Miranda and Christopher, two people from the town’s past. They failed to prevent a terrible ritual that caused the curse affecting everyone now. This explains the strong connection between them, a bond that stretches across time. Although Tabitha is still mourning the loss of her husband, Jim, who died last season, Jade’s deep and lasting love for Tabitha truly becomes apparent in season 4.

Tatiana Hullender from ScreenRant interviewed David Alpay, the actor who plays Jade in the popular sci-fi horror series on MGM+, to discuss his character’s connection with Tabitha and what he envisions for their future.

Jade Remembers The Emotion Of His Tie To Tabitha

Jade doesn’t just recall his previous lives with Tabitha; he also feels the powerful emotions of loving her in each one. Though he’s still grieving Jim’s recent death, Alpay explains to ScreenRant that Jade will need to be very strategic in how he acts.

David Alpay believes the character needs to tread carefully, especially after learning about the deep, recurring connection between them – a relationship that has existed across many lifetimes. He suggests the character not only recalls the history of this connection but also the feelings associated with it. A key moment, according to Alpay, is when the character sees her again in season four – helping Sophia out of a car – and their eyes meet. It’s the first time they’ve seen each other since discovering their shared past, and it’s a powerfully emotional scene. Alpay felt it confirmed the character remembers every life they’ve lived together, every iteration of their relationship, and the love that persisted through it all, even when she appeared in different forms. This memory carries forward throughout the story.

Alpay explained that showing love also means giving Tabitha space to recover and allowing her to be herself, so she doesn’t feel pressured or want to distance herself.

David Alpay believes his character showed his love for Jade by giving her space and allowing her to handle things at her own pace, especially after everything Jim went through. He feels that true love involves letting someone experience their own journey without being overbearing. He also praised the writers for developing Jade’s character to a point where she could be selfless, noting that she wouldn’t have reacted that way in the first season. He hopes this nuanced moment resonated with viewers.

What Jade Learns About Himself Through That Mushroom Scene

Although Jade’s major realization from the mushrooms hasn’t happened yet, seeing his younger self was a powerful experience for both him and Alpay. Alpay even described the actor who portrayed his younger self as looking remarkably like him.

It was a really strange but cool experience! Seeing the young actor, Vigo, who played a younger version of my character Jade, was amazing. He was incredibly talented, a lot of fun to work with, and honestly, he looked a lot like me – it was a bit eerie. We really enjoyed acting together.

A lot of careful planning went into creating that scene. Alpay and the crew were determined to avoid making Jade’s experience with mushrooms look silly or cartoonish. They considered everything – from the color palette to the use of real-life effects – to ensure the moment felt authentic.

David Alpay explained that the psychedelic sequence was intentionally designed to be subtle, avoiding overly comical or visually jarring effects like bright colors. To achieve this, they focused on practical, in-camera techniques. They experimented extensively with camera tests, including filming him walking backwards and reversing the footage, to create a slightly unsettling effect on his movement. The goal was to make the audience feel like something was ‘off’ without being able to pinpoint exactly what it was, suggesting a shift in reality.

One of the techniques they experimented with – though it didn’t make the final cut – was really interesting. They heated a sheet of plexiglass until it warped and bent, then moved it back and forth in front of the camera lens. The result looked like a blurry, CGI effect, but it was actually done entirely with practical effects, right in front of the camera. I really appreciated that creative approach.

They aimed to portray Jade’s experience with mushrooms as genuinely affecting him, making his hallucinations feel incredibly real. This was done to keep the scene serious and avoid the typical comedic portrayal of hallucinogenic trips.

The team really embraced practical effects, using techniques from older films – like smearing Vaseline on the lens to create a dreamy look. Being involved in that hands-on approach was unique. We also focused on keeping the experience grounded in reality for the character, Jade. We wanted everything to feel genuinely real to him, so he could truly connect with what was happening and not just dismiss it as a hallucination.

Everything Else David Alpay Said About From, Including Jade’s Viral Cat T-Shirt

ScreenRant asked how early the actors learned about the characters Jade and Tabitha’s reincarnation storyline. They wanted to know if it was revealed in the script itself, or if they were told about it beforehand.

ScreenRant asks about the story behind the cat shirt Jade frequently wears – whether there’s a personal connection for him in real life or within the show’s narrative.

I’m amazed by how popular this has become – it’s really gone viral! I’ve even seen cat shirts for sale on Etsy because of it. My character only had one outfit throughout the entire first season: a blue and white striped shirt, capri pants, and socks – no shoes! About halfway through the season, I asked Rachel if my character, Jade, could maybe change outfits. She said yes and invited me to look through a lot of clothes. I ended up finding a green cardigan at a thrift store in Halifax, where we film. It was one of those amazing East Coast thrift stores with beautiful knitted sweaters, like fisherman sweaters.

I started looking at the clothes and suggested a few outfits, pointing out one that felt particularly cozy and suited Jade’s style. They agreed and made three of those. Then I had an idea for a t-shirt. I’d seen a funny image online of a shy, fluffy kitten imagining itself as a brave adventurer, with a bolder kitten above it, maybe on a tree branch. I really wanted Jade to wear that shirt, so I asked if we could have it printed. I envisioned a bright pink shirt – something subtly playful without being too noticeable.

I’m wondering if we could use a bright pink color. I definitely don’t want anything that will draw attention to it, though. He just grabs whatever he wants without caring what others think, but I was thinking his outfit could reflect his personality. He’s a bit like a cat – a little grumpy, prefers his own company, and doesn’t like being bothered. I had a cat when I was growing up who was exactly like that, and later a dog who had the same personality.

ScreenRant: Oh wow.

I’ve always tried to connect with animals, but they don’t always seem to feel the same way. Still, I keep caring for them. Rachel Grant, a fantastic costume designer, designed several versions of cat shirts. Ultimately, she and MGM chose the purple one featuring various cat designs, and I agreed it was a good choice.

ScreenRant: Incredible.

I love that he gets to wear it daily – it’s really wonderful. It just makes things a little better, even though he’s been through a lot. Seeing him in that little cat shirt is fantastic, and it’s great to see everyone enjoying it and celebrating Jade.
